I didn't answer the second question because I think it should be when each individual kid is ready. When they (and Mom & Dad) feel comfortable with the people they're staying with, they can behave themselves, are polite and well mannered, and won't start crying for Mom & Dad at midnight. (just my opinon)
I guessed at the age for the first part of your poll. I just remember I was in the 4th grade the first time I spent the night at a friend's house. I'm pretty sure I was 9 & 10 in the 4th grade...
I said six but it depends on the kid. In kindergarten I was too little, in grade one or two I was ok. But when I was in grade four (or rather the summer after - age 10) I was a little too young for sleepover camp - I only went for a ten days but I got homesick on the second night. Mind you once I got over the homesick hump I was enjoying camp by the third day again.
The kindergarten was a semi-successful sleepover - I do remember being homesick but not enough for my parents to be made to come get me, so presumably within the friend's parents comfort limits of kid behaviour.
It depends on the children. Abby was totally desperate for a sleepover since she was 4, so I let her sleep over at a friend's house last winter (when she was still 5). She had a blast, wasn't homesick at all, and came home overtired and happy the next day. It's not for everyone, and it depends *entirely* on the parents involved. Some kids I won't even let into my house during the *day*, let alone overnight, and I surely wouldn't let Abby go over there, even now.
It probably helps that she's been sleeping over at Nana and Poppas' house at least once a month since she was about 3 months old...
When I first slept over it was when I was about 7, but the parents were really close friends of my mom and dad. Not sure if they would have let me sleep over anyone else's house at that time.
I agree, it depends on the child. I can't really make that call, though I answered 7 because of my experience.
