This is very nicely written, though I have to admit the only brand of crazy here that I identify with is Roseanne. It took so many years for feminism to embrace her, I think it's no wonder she went a little batty.

I was pretty young when Roseanne first premiered, but I seem to remember her turning off a lot of flyover country (not to disparage flyover country, I'm from it) folks with her crass and somewhat crude manner on the show. I don't recall feminists ever shunning her, but maybe you can fill me in on that one. She's so matriarchal, what isn't there to love? Another thing I really enjoyed about that show is how accurately it depicts the lower middle class of Illinois's Chicago suburbs. Finally...a show that speaks to my roots.

More evidence that she's a loonybird: Tom Arnold.

She was crass and crude and I think the idea of a poor and struggling housewife as an icon for feminism didn't catch on until much later in the show. I mean, granted, I was only peripherally aware of those things at that time, but I remember it being a bit of a dirty habit, watching that show. She herself probably didn't really think of herself that way until years later, when she started doing episodes featuring TV housewives from years past and the like.

But yeah - I think that show will be considered groundbreaking once history has had it's way with it.
