Ruminations and Rumours

Mar 16, 2007 23:48

I just re-downloaded Fleetwood Mac's classic hit record, "Rumours", the cover of which features, if I remember correctly, Stevie Nicks looking typically Wiccan and Lindsey Buckingham in some kind of terrifying man-tights and a billowing nightmare of a poet's shirt. That leads me to think about some of the more embarrassing music that I love ( Read more... )

Nothing like a beautiful woman exhorting me to confess!

Yes Yes and YES to the Gay Trifecta! My weakness to New Wave in general, and these three in particular, is a fairly new development in my musical education and is a result of my Retail Exile. I have a whole fake argument about the autonomous joy taken by the New Wave in the expansion of the kingdom of Pop Sounds (to impress the music snobs out there), but it's really just a smokescreen to cover my joy in harmonizing Andy Bell ( ... )

Well, well, Sampson!! Do you have pictures? I'd love to see what got did to your lid. How does it feel??

Nick, I'm totally down with bluegrass and country of the 50's and 60's too. And our shared love of the Gay Trifecta leads me to believe someday we should make each other mix tapes. (Speaking of new wave, do you like Squeeze? I feel they're often overlooked and actually pretty great.) Actually, I've been trying to beef up my bluegrass and country collection and I'd love some suggestions if you have any. I love almost all of it. Oh, and I really like a lot of rockabilly, too, though some of it also drives me up the wall.

I guess I also neglected to mention in the entry that I have a deep and abiding respect for Dolly Parton. And her formidable bust. I even like "Islands in the Stream", and I know that I should be embarrassed about that.

I feel similarly about Squeeze. I'm not more aware of their oeuvre than a good listen to satilite radio would make me, but the elided wit of their lyrics always strikes me.

The most exciting thing about New Wave, though, is listening to Punk negation (that's actual punk, btw) begin to negate itself. Fascinating shit. Also, Debbie Harry, of Blondie: hot shit.

As for classic country, I only ever listened to my Aunt's old 45s (which she kept in a cabinet next to her cabinet of .45s), and I've never actually done a real genre survey. Feel free to throw stuff my way, too.

I have photos of my hair, (and my new look in general), but no site on which to host 'em.

Nick, get with Flickr. It's addictive but actually useful, and you can store a shitwhack of images for free. That's how I posted the picture above of my senior picture in a wheat field. Also, Lori, the commenter below, is someone you should consider befriending (at least on Livejournal) as she is a serious musician as well. Actually I should have introduced her to Karen, too, because she went to school for music in Florida. The least of her achievements as a musician is playing bass trombone for Paul Anka's band, and her jazz and punk music also rocks.

Debbie Harry is a goddess. I even liked her solo album called Communion, if I recall correctly. I'm a big fan of Wire, too, who did some really interesting new wave/punk negation, too.

Anyway

Lors, I'll send you some Gay Trifecta music if you like, but I'm not sure you'll enjoy it...I think it's an acquired taste, kind of like haggis. If you weren't fed haggis early, you probably will never stuff your face with haggis. And new listeners tend to want to blow up my stereo when I bust out with Jimmy Somerville's falsetto (and delightful!) cover of "Don't Leave Me This Way". But you have varied tastes so maybe you will like it ( ... )

What am I listening to.....mostly this band from Denmark, Mew. They are my absolute favorite. It's like very good indie rock, very dreamy and a little proggy too - with the most amazing vocal melodies ever, and very dark lyrics. I pretty much listen to them all the time. They have only 2 albums available in the US. I'm actually seeing them @ Irving Plaza next week.

Otherwise, my usual mishmash of 80's-ish post-punk and college rock: Mission of Burma, The Feelies, The Fall, Husker Du, Dinosaur Jr., Fugazi, etc. Have been really into The Misfits/Samhain. Also, a lot of classical music, but I listen to that mostly on the radio so I have no control over what is hearing. Usually I just set my itunes so it just plays my entire collection of Mew on random over and over and over again. I'm pretty obsessed. I'm sure after I see them live it will be so much worse.

Kim, actually, on the contrary. Despite my sometimes cynical demeanor, I try not to dismiss movies before I actually give them a chance, particularly queer movies. And Lisa and I actually LOVED, not liked, but LOVED, Imagine Me & You. We honestly thought it was the lesbian movie we've been waiting for someone to make for the past decade, and we wish very much to add it to our collection. But I am curious to know why you'd think I'd hate it ( ... )
