Qatar

I landed in Qatar this morning at 4:35am en route from Japan to Paris. We had a 26 hour layover in Qatar, and it was way too early to check into our hotel, so we rented a car and drove around. I took a ton of pictures while Gau drove ( Read more... )

Wasn't Gau cross at you for this?

The thing I wanted to tell you about food: having read much about hummus but without any chance to find it sold there, I boiled a cup of lentils and then processed it in a blender, adding a little bit of cream and soy sauce. It turned out into some kind of... puree. In fact it could not be called hummus, but generally it was something alike, I guess.
When Val came back from work, I've put some of this stuff onto a piece of bread and gave him, asking him to guess what it was.
- Hmmm... definitely one of ingredients is an egg. Or is it a chicken paste?
He failed to guess and I had to tell him.
;)))

I make something like this and call it vegetarian chopped liver. Cook the cup of lentils, and slowly sautee onions and garlic till they're carmelized-- brown and sweet. Puree it all with 1 cup of walnuts, salt, pepper, a little sugar. It's not hummus, but it is yummy. I take it you can't get chick peas/ garbanzos?

Chick peas are available there, just I hadn't got them at the moment.

Lebanese and Israeli cuisine are my favorites...not that I've been to these places.

Here is how to make hummus.

Get some dried chick peas and throw them in a pot of water over night.

Next evening, drain the water, add new water and salt, boil chickpeas until they are soft. Toss in equal amount of lentils if you want some more protein, but not until about halfway through, since lentils will cook a lot faster than chick peas.

Then toss them in a food processor or mash them as best you can with whatever utensils you have (and old crappy bent fork works fine, too).

Add a bunch of lemon juice, cumin seeds, tahini sauce, and olive oil.

Garnish with some whole green olives, sesame seeds, paprika, and a little extra olive oil.

Serve it with some decent pita (lots of grains) and perhaps some romaine lettuce leaves.

man, I knew like every place in Hamilton (Ontario) to get falafel. It didn't matter the hour of the day...

Yay, Samwords! I like those. And I'm liking them more and more lately (not even just for the DING sound when you got points, but that certainly doesn't hurt). Your last few posts have impressed me a bunch. I hope you do end up with some sort of travel writing gig so the people who say you are boring when you write Magic strategy articles will have to admit that you are not always boring ( ... )
