I honestly don't think naming the dog after a "white" character would cause such a fuss, or hurt people as much, which could be considered hypocritical. However, as a person of coloured heritage, the connotations are hurtful and a reminder that my own grandfather was treated as less than human. As was my father. We are not talking about a mindset that only existed a couple of generations ago, we're talking about a mindset that still gets people beaten up and killed all over the world. Please, change the dogs name. Leaving a coloured character out of an au fic carries it's own connotations, sure- but none as harmful as implying that we are beasts of burden and labour ( ... )
