I think Glee went wrong because: 1) they got too big too fast, and Ryan Murphy could suddenly do anything he wanted, and like George Lucas, no one will tell him when it's stupid; 2) they scramble to get the rights to songs month in advance of scripting - popular-right-now songs, a particular artist's songs - they accomplish this and then they look at the songs they have, and write a story around whatever they think will sell well on iTunes. "We have some Bieber songs, how about making someone a big fan? Sam has the right hair. Oh, and then the girls will swoon! Shit, what will the girls sing? Do we have a random showtune for Rachel? What else is on the list?"

At this point it might be more entertaining to listen to the music and come up with your own story, as that would probably work just as well as anything the actual writers are doing.
