The picture has been circulating after the quake to both raise awareness about Japan's recent disaster and to move people's hearts. Well, it worked... However, people should be "glad" to know that it's fake. As in it was used back in 2008 after China's earthquake, and before that in 2006 I believe, and in other websites that have to do with cute

That reminds me a bit of a satellite picture of a hurricane that was making the rounds over the years, being called whatever the last hurricane was, and on Snopes they clarified that it was actually Hurricane Floyd from 1999. That actually made is more upsetting to me, because that was the hurricane that barely missed us when I lived in FL, and which the person I was living with took not at all seriously. (It was everything I could do just to get him to let me go to a shelter. I lost a bunch of books to water damage because he wouldn't let me move everything into the closets, but that just confirmed for him that it wasn't that bad. Uh huh.)

Okay, that doesn't have a lot to do with anything, it's just an anecdote. :P I guess the relevant thing is that I didn't see the photo until years later, after we'd broken up and I moved back to MI, but it made me super mad at him all over again.

Sorry to hear about your upsetting experience. :( But yeah, I can understand where you're coming from.

The part that annoys me is that there are people who are exploiting this pic and making it "recent" for the sake of selling papers or gain notoriety. It speaks of people's inability to become serious before a disaster of this magnitude--regardless of religion, nationality, culture, etc. To me it's about respect and empathy and it's sad to see that in some cases they are nonexistent.
