Her cozy home is just as she left it, the afternoon light slanting in and touching everything with gold. In another room, Sasha is reading the children a story. Alfdis, dozing in a sunbeam, lifts her head to gaze at Ali for a moment before rising and moving to rub against her ankles.
After the door is closed and locked, Ali reaches down to gather Alfdis up for nuzzles and scritches. "All quiet on the home front, I see?" she whispers to the cat as she paces quietly to the doorway, where she can watch her wife and children without disturbing them.
Alfdis purrs, giving Ali a few thoughtful sniffs before her tongue flicks out to lick the tip of Ali's nose with sandpapery feline affection.
Sasha glances up at Ali's footfall--she does have a talent for catching such details--but continues reading the story. She sees something in Ali that worries her, a hurt needing comfort, and she knows what comfort her wife draws from the children. Ali will make her presence known, Sasha is sure, the very moment she wants to. So for now, the children hear more about Tsarevich Ivan, and his many adventures.
Ali leans in the door frame, waiting for the story to be finished before doing anything to draw attention. "And that is why one must be kind to animals," she comments, still scritching Alfdis as best she can now that the cat has decided to be a muffler. Or is that purrfler? "And witches too, I suppose, until they prove unworthy."
