brock_tn SUBJECT: Adjustments to Operator Headspace
DATE:
A. A recent survey of problem reports from field service personnel has disclosed that the proximate cause of many service calls appears to be excessive operator headspace. After consultations, it has been determined that the most expedient means of resolving this problem would be to initiate a program to adjust operator headspace settings on-site when unacceptable settings are identified.
B. A formal addendum to the equipment manuals covering this service procedure is being prepared at this time, and will be distributed through the normal channels once the final approvals have been completed and it is received back from the printers. In the meantime, use of the interim service procedure outlined below is recommended.
C. Field service personnel are encouraged to discuss this situation with customers, with an eye to making operator headspace adjustments a normal part of their preventive maintenance schedule.
INTERIM PROCEDURE: Field Adjustment of Operator Headspace
TOOLS REQUIRED: One (1) 10-lb hammer; or, one (1) 5-kg hammer; or, one (1) 600 ft-lb torque wrench (see Footnote 1)
PROCEDURE:
1. Orient the operator requiring adjustment so that the distal portion of the frontal aspect of the cranium, (i.e., the forehead,) is readily accessible with the adjusting tool.
2. While grasping the adjusting tool firmly in the dominant hand, grasp the operator requiring adjustment by the ear, nose, shirt-collar, throat, (or any other handy point of purchase,) using the other hand.
3. Apply the adjusting tool to the distal portion of the frontal aspect of the subject operator's cranium, using as much force as seems necessary to effect the adjustment. Repeat the application of the adjusting tool as required until subject operator functions at an acceptable performance level.
Footnote 1: The tools listed are shown in the preferred order of selection. Service personnel should keep in mind that if they are forced by circumstances to use the 600 ft-lb torque wrench to adjust operator headspace that the wrench must then be recalibrated before it may be placed back into service as a torque-setting tool. A list of rapid turn-around calibration facilities can be obtained by calling our Technical Library Service at 1-888-555-9435. Ask for Technical Note 98-167, Version G.21.
