I suspect Widmore knew Ben was going to kill him (as part of a plan to stop smokey) and whispered the best lie he could to Smokey.

Apert can't be out. Frank can ambiguously die, but Richard can't.

I'm working today during the series finale, but I'll have my laptop set up for TV. I'll be interrupted a thousand times during the episode, I'm sure - but I'll be watching.
