Other characters: Costigan
Character name: Hayley Stark
Age: 16
Canon: Hard Candy
Canon point: A year and a little bit after canon, on the night of her sixteenth birthday.
Totem: A red iPod nano. In normal Limbo, it functions as normal. During a fissure, all of the songs/artists/etc read as Edith Pilaf's “Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien,” but play as BRRRRRRM (the super slow version of that song, as featured in Inception).
Weapons: A simple pocket taser stun weapon (enough to knock someone unconsciousness for a very short period of time, but not to seriously harm them).. and thick, blue rope.. if that counts.
Abilities/powers: None.
Location: Nighthawks. Hayley and Jeff first meet in a small and modern coffee shop with several simple, wooden tables and large, cushy chairs. They have a glass display case at the counter with pastries and the like as well as coffee and various espresso drinks (espresso machine behind the counter, coffee off to the side of the register on the counter against the wall). The front area is walled in with glass, including the main door. The back area (additional seating) has pumpkin colored walls with bathrooms just beyond.
Personality:
Hayley seems like a pretty average and intelligent girl. She looks younger than she is and seems a little more mature, but still fairly young and naïve. It’s primarily a façade, however. Hayley is a self-described “cute, vindictive, little bitch.” She is actually extremely cunning and manipulative, intelligent far beyond her years and with a very personal and twisted sense of justice. She’s very black and white in many of her opinions and relationships with almost no gray area. Hayley is afraid of being in a position where she loses control with her victims and thus has become a compulsive liar so that she can always be the one with the truth; when in doubt, she tries to defer with sarcasm. She enjoys control, toying with people, and making them feel the remorse and guilt that she thinks they should feel. If you do something wrong.. really wrong, she will do everything in her power to destroy you.
The girl has a very strict sense of justice which she prefers to enforce herself. She will do anything and live any lie for however long she needs to in order to manipulate the target of her vengeance. She does her research, often working on plans for months before she carries them out. Hayley has been desensitized in every way, feeling no remorse for those she views as predators or the guilty party. No sympathy, no mercy. Once her mind is set, whether to seek revenge on a perpetrator or simply to get a drink, she has to carry through.
Her true interests and personality are a little twisted by the many lies she tells. In her own element, when her control/power is not threatened at all, she becomes a fairly normal girl and blends in more so than she probably should if she were being herself (like most teens). She had friends whom she got along with and, over time, came to care about.
Hayley is jaded, composed of disdain with the darker side of the world and a deeply disturbed sense of what she calls “realism.” She is unable to truly trust many people (particularly guys) and shies away from most attachments, especially when she feels she’s getting close to them. That is, her real self. Her many lies and manipulations are happy to get close to anyone, to use them, and to play them. She's not opposed to flirting as part of that, but has deep-seeded issues with being sexual with anyone.
EDIT: Hayley has deep-seeded issues being sincerely intimate with anyone (sexual or otherwise), but she is not opposed to flirting or sex in general. So long as she remains in control and is an image (not herself), she's fine with that kind of stuff; she won't go seeking it out, but she won't avoid it either. It's a natural part of growing up and Hayley recognizes that; it's also important to fitting in. [/edit]
Despite being a teenager, Hayley has a level of emotional disconnect that prevents her from ever becoming too truly emotional. She tries not to ever let herself get carried away, but it can still happen. Because of her tendency to distrust others, she may have a difficult time connecting with people; it is difficult to manipulate her for the same reason. The only time she ever feels comfortable being herself is locked alone in her room, her sanctuary, where no one is watching and she doesn’t have to worry about someone betraying her.
The girl likes to be independent, but still expects a certain level of being cared for (as a result of her age, not her family status); she is torn between being an adolescent and an adult. Because she's not completely ridiculous, she will attempt to seek out a pseudo family of sorts to help her take care of herself while in Limbo, but she will be unlikely to tell much of the truth to anyone about any of her tastes, interests, etc.
History:
Hayley grew up with an older sister and two somewhat loving parents in California. Her parents were extremely absent and critical and her sister was always in the spotlight, despite Hayley's success academically. Although not a terrible or abusive family, she felt primarily alone and began to turn to her friends to seek solace. Because of her trust issues (due to neglect by her parents and such), her only real friend in school was a girl who ended up being raped and murdered. The perpetrator was caught, arrested, and put in jail with a life sentence and chance for parole. Hayley was outraged and began to take justice into her own hands with other cases.
In canon, Hayley seeks out Jeff Kohlver after Donna Mauer goes missing, knowing he's a pedophile and murderer as she has already killed Aaron (the other man involved). Although she never really knows who did the actual rape or murder (Jeff or Aaron), she doesn't care, because it's about the justice for her rather than the truth.
Film canon.

WHOSE GOT TWO THUMBS AND DOESN'T HAVE TO WRITE THIS SECTION? THIS GUY.
1st person sample:
Wow. Buildings on the beach. I guess someone lost some sort of conservation rally..
This whole thing is pretty bizarre. I mean, I'm not one to judge, but it's a little weird that my name's already on some mailbox. I really hope we don't have to pay rent or anything, because I've never actually lived on my own and I don't have any money-- Oh, yeah. Speaking of coming here, can someone tell me where I can find a washer and dryer? My clothes are still soaking wet and covered in sand.
I'm Hayley, by the way. Hayley Stark.
