CHARACTER INFO
Character Name: Hayley Stark
Fandom: Hard Candy
Age: 16
Canon Point: From a year and a few days after the film takes place.

Warden/Inmate: Inmate. Hayley lies all the time, doesn't care much about other people, and enjoys delivering vengeance in the form of assisted suicide.

Inventory: Red jacket, obviously. Hayley will also arrive with her messenger bag of tricks (female razor, shaving cream, good amount of blue rope (enough to rig something to nearly hang Jeff), cell phone, blank VHS tape, a notebook with lots of miscellaneous notes, a couple pens, and a book on medicine) - minus the taser.

Abilities/Powers: None.

Personality:
Hayley doesn't sweat the small stuff, so to speak. When she's bored, she is fairly nonchalant and relatively social, but this attitude is mainly a flippant use of time rather than sincere interest (she's curious, but would leave an idle chat in a heartbeat for something more interesting). She takes to lying like its her primarily language due to not really caring enough about anyone to be honest with them.

The girl mainly plays roles, telling so many lies that she kind of lost herself along the way and some part of her is unsettled by that fact. She silently wonders if the things she likes are because she likes them or if they are a reaction to a situation (does she hate Goldfrapp because they're bad or because Jeff liked them?) or something she picked up as a lie that she told so often it became true. Not knowing how to deal with that herself and not wanting to admit to it (to others or even to herself really), she just keeps on lying. When in doubt, she defers with sarcasm.

She is observant and quick to judge behaviors. She is vengeful. The girl operates in black and white thinking once she has made up her mind about something, but is careful to take her time in forming those opinions and confirming them (though it's extremely difficult to talk her out of an opinion even as she's in the process of confirming). A behavior is right or wrong, regardless of why, but a person may be more than that behavior - Hayley attacks Jeff for being a pedophile in general, not solely what he did to Donna Mauer ("I am every little girl you ever touched, [etc.]").

Even when she has nothing against someone, Hayley tends to be blunt with that person in what she wants to say (unless she's playing a role with them). She doesn't care much for other peoples' feelings, which a large factor in her not caring so much why someone does what they do. That's not to say that Hayley doesn't understand why people think and feel the way they do and how to play them; she does understand, she just doesn't really care. That's why it didn't matter why Jeff did what he did, or whether or not he actually killed Donna. He was a part of it, therefore he suffers the same consequences for what he allowed to happen. She does her research for things like this, often working on plans for months before she carries them out. Hayley has been desensitized against predators in every way, feeling no remorse for those she views as the guilty party. No sympathy, no mercy.

Hayley is very idealistic in her own twisted way, mainly as a result of becoming jaded. It's not okay with her that some people are flawed in specific ways (ie pedophilia); she believes that if she can rid the world of the monsters, that maybe it will be the better place that she knows everyone wants. In that sense, she tends to be more interested in what is possible and how to achieve it than in accepting what is; this is why she takes things into her own hands. She also has little respect for authority as an institution (that is, she may respect a police officer, but because of how awesome she is and not because she's a policewoman).

She likes results, but cares very little for statistics. That is, she is motivated by emotion, but feels accomplishment primarily by quantifiable success. Hayley can be extremely patient and determined when the situation calls for it and these skills go a long way in the things that she chooses to do. Though she likes hard results, she does actually tend to just go with the flow and not be too structured in the things she endeavors.

The girl is a WEE bit arrogant and elitist. She believes herself superior in some ways, enough to feel like it's her right to choose who dies according to their behaviors, etc. It's not something she really rubs in peoples' faces, but the belief is there. She does occasionally enjoy lording her control over others when they become the victim of her revenge, but only in the sense of her mocking them and pointing out their own crimes. That said, the girl can be competitive at times because she just doesn't like losing.

Hayley is not afraid of putting herself in danger. She's not stupid, but she enjoys the rush of high-risk behavior (so long as it fits her schema of what is "right"). When in dangerous situations related to revenge, she views herself as devoted to the cause and prides herself on that perceived selflessness.

She loves to tinker with things to come up with new ideas and has an insatiable appetite for knowledge. Hayley is creative and not afraid to think outside the box. She has no desire to be a leader or in any real assigned position of responsibility, but tries to be fun, outgoing, and engaging to those she happens to take a liking to. She'll freely make promises she can't keep and holds little in the ways of loyalty (for the same reasons of not really caring). The girl likes to be independent, but still expects a certain level of being cared for (primarily as a result of her age); she is torn between being an adolescent and an adult. Because she's not completely ridiculous, she will attempt to seek out some people to watch her back in this place, but is unlikely to form much in the way of "friends."

Path to Redemption: Hayley has never really been forced to care about anyone, so she just hasn't. Being in this more restrictive environment will naturally encourage that, but it's an essential part of her redemption (because then it might make her gain enough respect to listen). She needs to learn that her lying is not a substitute for being her own person, which will come from a combination of established respect (and trust, at some level) and calling her out on her lies a lot. BUT MAINLY, someone will need to make her realize that no matter how much she does, it will never rid the world of evil people OR that the bad behavior is necessary in the world, and that sometimes bad acts can have good motivations. It will be important to establish respect before calling her out for all her lies all over the place though (a warden can call her out between the two of them without too much trouble, but calling her out all over right away will just make Hayley kind of hate them).

History:
Hayley grew up with an older sister and two somewhat loving parents in a middle-class home in California. Her parents were partially absent, but mainly completely oblivious. They were always critical of Hayley and put her sister in the spotlight (so to speak), despite Hayley's successes (like achieving honor roll, etc.). Although not a terrible or abusive family, she felt primarily alone and began to turn to strangers and peers to find the attention she didn't get at home. Because she was constantly moving from shallow friendship to shallow friendship, she pretty much stopped caring about people. Her only quasi-friend in school was a girl who ended up being raped and murdered. The perpetrator was caught, arrested, and put in jail with a life sentence and chance for parole. Hayley was outraged and began to take justice into her own hands with other cases.

In canon, Hayley seeks out Jeff Kohlver after Donna Mauer goes missing, knowing he's a pedophile and murderer as she has already killed Aaron (the other man involved). Although she never really knows who did the actual rape or murder (Jeff or Aaron), she doesn't care and sees that both of them kill themselves.

Film canon.

Extra Notes: Let me know if you need more history or if that's okay.

SAMPLES
Journal Entry:
A school in the middle of nowhere? Could you get any more "Lord of the Flies?" Well, okay, they crashed in a plane and were all guys--which is totally sexist and lame--and relied on a conch to talk instead of having the joys of social media. Although, I know, it could be argued that at least they had something to say... but all those conditions. I couldn't live with all those conditions. Anyway, my point is that this feels right out of some university student's first attempt at a novel.

Oh, and I'm totally not wearing a school uniform, if that's what this is about? I prefer my own clothes. Thanks.

Sample Log:
Hayley shrugged with a small pout of her lip and a tilt of her head, chipper in her response to his words. The idea of spending time in Zero wasn't great, but she didn't see how it could be so terrible having never really spent time down there before. The only thing she worried about was boredom, but if she had a book or her journal, then she wouldn't really need anything else. It wasn't the same for her as it would be for those with abilities. Enough people liked her to visit her anyway. "I'm not too worried about that. I mean, we might have a few hours, yeah, but really, we could have a few days. I waited until today specifically, because my warden's in a coma and yours is distracted with the wardens, so I'm really not worried about him finding you."

"It's clean," she remarked about the bottle of water she was offering him. Hayley capped the bottle and tossed it back near her bag, holding the cup up by his mouth. Her other hand lifted with two fingers straightened. "Scout's honor."

And while she waited, expecting him to refuse again, she replied to his comment with a smile. "I'm not untying you, Jonathan, and we're not leaving anytime soon. It's.. okay, well, I know you think we're friends, right? But we're really not and I'd really like to talk to you for awhile and find out exactly what it is that you've been lying to me about. So I figure we stay here for a few days and then, when you get hungry and thirsty and tired, you'll be more willing to talk. I don't really expect you to believe me right now."

She glanced away and then back again. "Oh. Do you.. did you want me to leave you alone for awhile? I can go look around again if you want some alone time. Or I can stay with you."
