I doubt anyone is seriously trying, but as this has been a long-standing theme in science-fiction, and with the rapid advances in genetic engineering, I suppose many people think it might happen eventually. Some of those hate the idea so much that they want to stop it before it happens.

I'd say it's more likely a reaction against people putting human ears on mice and such things. Which is bad, because then they kill the mice... Using other living things as replacement part factories is kind of respectless...

Well that, or they've seen any of the bazillion TV shows StalkerCat has appeared in. And he's scary-like, so I kind of understand them then.

I think Mr. Bush looks at it more from a religious angle than anything else. Like, mixing human with animal is ungodly, or some such.
