Shopping for birthday gifts in an hour and a half is an impossible proposition, especially since Alan is easily given to distraction. All potential gifts must be thoroughly inspected, any interesting trinkets toyed with, and...well, everyone knows balloons are endlessly fascinating. It's to hotel staff's credit that they don't so much as bat an eyelash at any of this.

She jumps up and gets the door for him. She opens it smiling. "Gifts!" is all she could manage.
