Lighting is magic.

I was thinking about my old days at the Carol Belk Theater this morning. I don't know why. I was, though, and I found myself thinking about the very first show I was Master Electrician for.

Liam would remember, because he was a first-time stage manager on the very same production. We were working on Crimes of the Heart, and everything that ( Read more... )

I always loved hang/focus and tree climbing, too. :) I was actually semi-famous for climbing the maple in front of the theater.

And while I did a little bit of design work here and there, I actually preferred the grunt work. I liked seeing it in action better than trying to visualize it and put it on paper.

That's really beautiful Kate. A friend of mine does all the lights for all the shows on campus, and she's pretty amazing. I think she'd really be able to relate to this. I'm very tempted to email it to her.

Aw, I used to be the lighting girl on campus. :) If you'd like to send it along, go ahead.

It is quite a feeling, isn't it.

Just last night I found myself in a theater space I know and love/hate, making preliminary plans of just how much of the pretty looks that materialized in my brain when I saw the blocking and heard the sound cues I can wrestle from insufficient power, and barely enough control channels.

*tempt, tempt* Come to Balticon in May and hang lights for me! I will introduce you to an interesting bunch of folks that has a lovely single malt collection.

I don't do lighting anymore. I haven't in years now. Usually that's okay - I've replaced those lights with the ones that come on in a kid's head every once in a while, when they really and truly get something.

That was beautiful.

(and only slightly barfworthy)

Augh, the smiley inside the parentheses drives me crazy, too. It really DOES look wrong. (See? :)) It's like the smiley has a double chin.

That's how I felt every time I had to come up with a lighting design when I was teaching drama for the past few years. I didn't do a lot of it in college, aside from the basic stuff we all had to learn, and to piece something together and then look at the finished product and realize "Holy crap, I DID know what I was doing!" is such a great feeling. :D
