There's a weird gap in anyone who seems to think that having to read the book to pass the test is an unreasonable demand.
He does know that the test is supposed to measure how well he understood the book, right? I'm getting the feeling he views tests as just something that happens, like weather, rather than things you craft to a purpose.

That is something I keep trying to explain to them and keep failing to explain effectively - that tests have a purpose and grades are actually supposed to measure something. I think I may have to start directly teaching that at the beginning of the year.
