My Honors class has decided they want to write a musical. This is obviously insane, which is why I feel I must do it. Singing' in the Rain and Rent. Failing Rent, due to it being chock-a-block full of sex and drug use, Phantom of the Opera.

I am so looking forward to hearing more about this.

Singin' in the Rain is really more about the start of talkies and musicals in Hollywood. Rent I haven't seen but have heard marvelous things about it.

It's about the start of talkies, sure. But the two movies represent two wildly different styles of musicals--the one is about as classic golden age as it's possible to be without actually having been secreted from the glands of Richard Rogers, and the other is a gem of the modern rock opera age. If there's only space to watch two movies (which, given that we only have a week, I would think is the case), these two would be a good primer.

Something from Rogers & Hammerstein, Andrew Lloyd Weber and probably one more, maybe a bit more modern/edgy.

I second Phantom of the Opera, and maybe Oklahoma! or South Pacific.
