Sometimes the short cut isn't the shortest way.

Sometimes, when you think someone is so far ahead of you that you can't even see them, you hear something behind you, and turn around to see the person you thought was winning the race. Really you were winning.

I've experienced similar things. I think the most important thing is to compete with yourself. If we always compare ourselves with others, then our self-worth is relative to who we're around - if that's the case, I'll always feel like a loser if I'm around people who I think are awesome. If we compete with ourselves, then we can see our own strengths and talents and how to improve who we are - without focusing so much on the infinite things we are not.
