I've been thinking about posting about this for quite some time, but tonight seems appropriate. What do you believe? How are your views shaped by what you believe? Do you feel your beliefs are healthy

Tell me about it with the founding fathers jazz ~ coming from Salem, Massachusetts, I know all about what the original "founding fathers" (and mothers and daughters, etc...) wreaked in the name of their devotion (masquerading as devotion to God, but really ended up revolving around a devotion to profit and property and social standing... hmm, not much has changed in some respects!).
I believe that we *do* know something about that universal mystery, for it is somewhere within us all as we are *all* part of it. And that includes not only humans, but animals, plants, stones, water... you name it.
I also believe that any religion which tries to tell you animals have no soul is utterly egotistical and grossly mistaken in their impression that humans are the end all, be all (or that the US is the "greatest country on Earth" for that matter).
I believe to some extent that we have to remember that the other person is you.
I'm pretty religious but I don't believe that any one religion holds the key to the Divine. We all follow the path that works best for us and we all get to the same place. For some people that path may be a secular one and that's their business.
I don't necessarily think that people in positions of power should pretend not to be religious, but I do believe that they should not take a job if the rules of their church prohibit them being able to function properly in that job. That includes everything from Catholic pharmacists who won't prescribe birth control to government officials who have to choose between civil rights and Conservative views of homosexuality, to Muslim bartenders.
I believe that deists of any religion are insane. I believe I'll have another beer while they kill each other over whose imaginary parent figure is better.
