That's sad and sudden indeed. I know I'd break out in cold sweat and curse up a storm. I hope the warranty is still valid. Your data is important but so is your money! I wouldn't be so quick to hand my storage devices to computer-savvy strangers either.
I've heard of people who remove their faulty internal hard drives, wrap them in water-absorbent materials, place them in Ziplocs, and leave them in the freezer for several hours before using them again. This freezer trick doesn't always work, and yours is an external drive, but you might want to read more about it.
Man... I got 21+ GB of music on that thing! An' nearly 5GB of fanfics that I've saved over th' years... Not t' mention all the current fics I've been worki'n on...
"Optics Welded Shut" is m' only fic that I had totally printed out an' workin' with in my notebook. Everythin' else is digital.
