Red and BlueGENDER: Male.
APPEARANCE:
As can be seen in his HGSS sprite here, Red is a pretty unassuming character. His look is simply that of a pokemon trainer at their most basic form (in this encounter with him, that's even his name). Jeans, shoes for running, a backpack... The first hint that there's more than meets the eye is that he wears essentially a t-shirt in a freezing cave.
He doesn't look cold in the slightest, either, but ready and waiting to see what you've got in store for him. Red's got a difficult expression to read, differences in it often minute. Not to say he's expressionless, but if he feels best staying subtle (which is usually) he will.
One constant is his trademark hat, hiding a slightly messy head of black hair. It's possible that he even sleeps in it. And despite what fanart often implies, his eyes are more of a very reddish brown than red outright. Though it holds true when he's angry....
PERSONALITY & HOUSE REQUESTS:
Going on a pokemon journey is more than a chance to catch them all, or become the greatest trainer in the land. It's an opportunity for personal growth, too, and it shows in the progress of Kanto's champion, Red.
As a player character, Red's individuality isn't immediately obvious, given that he's got almost no dialogue apart from thoughts on things he observes, like signs. The best clues come from his relationships with NPCs.
Red is only eleven years old when he leaves his hometown, quiet, rural Palette. He's a curious boy then, apparently a good child loved by his mother. His best friend until then is Green Oak, the neighbor boy who eventually becomes so cocky and absorbed in becoming a trainer that their friendship turns into a rivalry.
Prior to this it seems Red is content enough playing video games at home, but a visit to Professor Oak changes everything, introducing him to what would become his new greatest companion: a Pikachu. Initially, they're paired up simply for safety. It's dangerous to travel without a pokemon at your side while wild ones run about in the grass.
Red handles a trip from Palette to the neighboring Viridian City so well the professor approves, seeing potential in the boy as much as his own grandson. Both Red and Blue receive their own Pokedexes and the challenge of collecting data on as many pokemon as they can find. Though it's not the only goal of their journeys, they're out to be the best competitively, too. And they each begin to travel all across Kanto, Green usually a step ahead wherever Red goes.
Though being in second place for long doesn't mean he's as much of a loser as Green likes to tease. Not in the least. As he makes his way from town to town and gym to gym, he's fast to surprise everyone.
After successful battles his opponents always have something to say. Somehow he remains unassuming when he meets new people, rare to give his name by the time he's gone. Red's been called a "child prodigy", "rough", "skilled", "feisty", and "spirited", just to name a few. The reputation of a kid turned powerhouse spreads over Kanto like wildfire as he sweeps through the battle scene, but no one ever seems to know what to expect when they actually meet him. The variety of these descriptions hint at an ability to adapt to any sort of battle victoriously. "You mix brawn with brains", he's been told.
To begin with, Red actually talks to a lot of people. He's definitely an information gatherer - and a good one at that. He's unafraid to approach people when he finds himself in an unfamiliar setting, or investigating objects and features around him. It's resulted in many things, from being given gifts that help him along his in his travels, to simply being told to get lost. Which often only makes him investigate more.
He's not without his share of losses, either, though in his youth they effected him terribly. If every member of his team goes down, he seems to black out himself. Though however severe his own condition becomes, it's never enough for him to belay getting his team healed immediately.
Professor Oak comments on the day Red becomes champion, that he did so thanks to the love and trust he shares with his pokemon. Red may be unrelenting towards an opponent, but towards his team he works in an almost harmonious tandem. He trusts them all with his life, and with their help he's traveled land and sea.
While Red isn't an unfriendly person, he seems unable to stick around with people for long, quite the rolling stone in his youth, and living in almost total seclusion when he's older.
There is a hint of mischief in him, apparent in a silent, knowing smile. More than once he's been shooed away for poking his nose where someone doesn't want him to. Often he'll find his way around most any barrier or deterrent and into many a secret hideout. It's doubtful Team Rocket could have been stopped so quickly if Red hadn't uncovered their shady deeds so quickly.
It's almost remarkable, too, to find such a young person unafraid to break apart a crime organization single-handedly. Any challenge of Team Rocket's, even an attempt to sway him towards their side, Red meets with utmost opposition.
Red is very much an independent soul, constantly on the move to improve and learn. He's the type able to both receive advice and question it. He's not without skepticism, especially when he knows a suggestion has come from an unsavory character.
As much as he initiates conversation, he doesn't actually talk much in return. He keeps his words short and precise, which is sometimes taken as blunt. He doesn't mean to offend anyone, though his honesty is seldom barred once he's provoked to speak.
Despite always being one step behind his rival, Red becomes champion of Kanto in a very short time. Eventually he defeats him one last time, within hours of Green receiving the title first. The battle is long, and one of the hardest, most satisfying ones in his life.
He's entered into the Hall of Fame forevermore, having emerged victorious from every gym in Kanto, The Elite Four, and at last the former champion.
Yet he keeps on moving.
Eventually as his travels continue, going into Johto as well as back around Kanto, Red finds a place for himself deep within the mountain that sits between the two lands, Mt. Silver. It's a perilous area, the terrain as dangerous and challenging as the wild pokemon that live there, if not more.
It's just want he needs.
He remains there, training deep in the Mountain for at least a year until a new, younger trainer manages to fight their way up there and face him.
And win.
Not a word is exchanged in this battle, not when it begins, not when it's over. Post-defeat, Red disappears in silence. It's hard to say what he does after that. Was he angry, as Green was three years ago? Did he break down, wanting to vanish into further obscurity? Maybe both, maybe neither of these things, either way he's impressed, encouraged to learn from the experience and train again, as he always has since the age of eleven.
He does return to his place in Mt. Silver eventually, better than before and ready to meet that young face again to see what they've learned since their first battle, too. Because in Red's world, there's no such thing as early retirement.
Whether he ever goes back home, to check in with his mother, or Professor Oak, or Green (who he seems to have grown on better terms with again), or any of his other friends, no one's telling. Certainly not Red himself, social obligations aren't his strong point.
These factors gather together to make a young man ideal for either Gryffindor or Ravenclaw in my eyes.
For aspects of a Gryffindor, Red is very much a sort of hero, unafraid of danger, banishing evil and ill-will. It's ingrained in him that to be a good trainer means doing the right thing. No pokemon is evil in his eye, and in turn neither is he. It it means harder work playing for the good team, so be it (as long as no one is overworked, of course, because that's no good either). He's made a name for himself in history, as a force not to be underestimated. He practically glued to his team, Pikachu especially, an unrelenting loyalty held between them that would make Gordric proud. Though perhaps a little more so if that applied to the people in Red's life, too.
Which eases the way into Ravenclaw, as again, while Red is not an unfriendly person, he's not a very social one either. And he's okay with that. The companionship of his Pikachu and the rest of his pokemon is enough to allow him to withstand life on a mountain peak, nearly cut off from the world below him. Ravenclaws reach for the sky, and Mt. Silver is a great place to do just that. It can give a vibe that he's got a lofty attitude when really it's untrue. Even as champion, he's the last person to rub his title in anyone's face. He never denies a challenge as though someone's not good enough for him, eager to see what any opponent's got. In exchange, he gets to learn from both his victories and losses (though the latter are less common occurrences).
Red's quiet nature is a defining trait, simply because he's constantly watching and listening, for the difference in what people say and their action taken, for how things work, and what they mean. Despite this, for all his observance, there are some things he simply hasn't grasped, like the value of coming down the mountain sometime to say hello, or at least call his mother (this is an aspect of him she appears to accept, if not fully understand. She's proud of him, but worries for his welfare.).
An open book Red is most certainly not. People are sometimes alarmed by how differently he looks compared to how he battles, or simply ask that he not stare so penetratingly as he sometimes does. It's obvious his sense of focus is vast, but no so much that he loses sight of the big picture. While working towards one goal, he's willing to take time to look at other factors along the way.
Red's values and actions define much of who he is. It's the way he expresses himself that differentiate what house he fits in best. Perhaps in his youth he had more of the heart and gusto to shine in Gryffindor, but as he's grown on his travels, the quieter and more reserved he's become, gaining and retaining knowledge of himself and his world around him that constantly evolves.
COMMUTER DETAILS:
"Disbanded Team Rocket" is kind of a red flag towards any evil doer, I'd assume. Voldy will be looking elsewhere for someone to give orders to.
POSITION:
Student.
ABILITIES & POWERS:
In a supernatural sense, Red doesn't have any. Just a small town guy. But as far as skills go, he's had no problem living alone atop a snowy, dangerous mountain peak with nothing but six pokémon and like, a backpack. He's gained some wild survival skills at a young age and has yet to forget them.
His mastery of battling with his team can be listed as a power of his wit and experience, since it takes a team effort between himself and his party, an understanding of each one of his pokemon and any scenario that may arise between them and their opponent. He and Pikachu in particular have an almost wordless language; an enemy may not see much after a tip of Red's hat and a flash of yellow.
WAND:
Red's wand is made of a stable-feeling pine, 11 1/4 inches long with a phoenix feather core. Its length corresponds with the age he was when his journey to become a master began, plus the Pokedex number of his greatest companion (though wizards don't use the metric system). In Red's hands, the wood's reputation as being exceptional for nonverbal spellwork remains intact. Pine also favors people capable of doing things independently from others, in line with how few people chose to live so far from human contact as he has.
MISC.:
- This Red is based most heavily on the one to appear in Yellow version and HGSS, so his timeline may vary compared to a canonmate from say FRLG. There are so many Reds. I'd be willing to append headcanon here and there to stay flexible, though.
-
Pikachu will be his only pokemon to be summoned along with him. An electric mouse is close enough to a pet rat, right? (I really hope it can stay! Red might not function otherwise...)
Red's Pikachu refuses to reside inside a pokeball, an unusual behavior that seems to have eased in the past few years, but goes uncontested by its trainer. Naturally it's affectionate with Red, and poses little danger to others unless provoked. Though sometimes it will give small shocks for fun. Despite it's usually cute looks and behavior, it's got an arsenal of moves that can devastate an enemy in lightning speed: Volt Tackle, Quick Attack, Thunderbolt, and Iron Tail. Luckily Red knows how to keep its power in check.
WRITING SAMPLESFIRST PERSON (TEXT):
I'm taking Care of Magical Creatures tomorrow, but it sounds different from what I'm expecting.
[As in, what is this world where some sort of ball doesn't even exist.]
Are there ways to classify these creatures by type? Or is something different done here? I'd like to better understand their relationship with people in this world, too. It doesn't sound like many partnerships happen.
[Naturally he's compelled to pet Pikachu's head, as he finishes his message and waits for an answer....]
THIRD PERSON:
Learning to fight by his own power is a very new concept. Red's hardly got the body of a fighter, though he's in shape from years of walking and biking. It helps to have that endurance in a place like this, where he must dodge and duck and swing his wand arm forward, to protect against anything that comes his way from his opponent.
He doesn't say a word during the entire duel, but it's visible in bright red eyes that he's practically screaming in his head.
Vermillious!
A flash of red lightning flies from his wand, and gets reflected in the dark eyes of the yellow creature watching the exchange from the sidelines. It's anxious, at its feet and beginning to crackle with nervous static.
Red takes a chance to shoot it a glance, no. It's difficult for the both of them. Red doesn't quite hit his target in his distraction, and he's nearly hit by another blast before he makes a hasty roll aside.
He's got a lot to learn here, but that's never been a problem before. Because he'll find a way, and this duel isn't over.
