Computer Advice

I'm thinking of buying a new computer when my tax return money comes in but I don't know a lot about computers. The last time I bought one, I made a few rookie mistakes. It was the first time buying a computer and I bought it for the sale, mostly, ordered online, and ended up with a bulky desktop replacement with a crappy graphics display. I ( Read more... )

90% of that may have been in a foreign language but my small input is no I don't think 6GB is too much, I wouldn't go less than 4GB. Vidding programs, especially adobe, eat up memory. If you're vidding you should go with as much processor power and memory as you can afford.

Okay see that's what I was wondering. I mean, if 4GB will be "more than enough" then I would just go with 4GB and see if I can find a cheaper machine. But this one priced so well at 6GB made it kind of hard to resist. What I don't want to happen is to get 4GB and then later wish I'd plurged for the 6GB.

6G of RAM and 640G hard drive sound reasonable to me, especially in a laptop. It should work quite well for vidding purposes. I agree that 4G would be the minimum RAM for modern vidding. And be aware that your hard drive and external will probably fill up very quickly! Video files are huge.

Good luck with your vidding, and I hope you have a lot of fun with the new computer.

Thank you, that is what I wanted to know. If 4GB is the "minimum" then I think 6GB is probably the better bet, especially at such a good price. (It's some special Best Buy model only available there.)

Regarding needing space for vid-files, I realize I won't have much to worry about with the 640GB but I feel that is a little too much for me. I already have a 500GB mini external which I got at Christmastime and so I would have been fine with a "standard" capacity hard drive, so in this case I think the 640GB is just a bonus.

Well, I'm running an i7 machine on a Windows 7 platform, with 8GB of RAM and 2TB of storage. I use the computer for vidding, so I love the processing speed and the storage capacity. I've already filled 1TB with video files. So yeah, if you do much vidding, you'll be surprised how quickly your hard drive will fill up. The 640 GB is not too much.

See, if a desktop was an option for me, I would love something like that. But I just don't have the space for it unfortunately.

I don't like vidding on a laptop but I support the hell of out Asus. This would be a good one, and I'd get it. and honestly depending on the fandoms you vid, you don't need a lot of space. I mostly do videos to Nolan's Batman [including rogue character ie Harley Quinn] so I keep my most used DVDs on my hard drive and keep other one shot videos on my eternal hard drive, and that works well for me.

The only thing I will warn you about is the only problem I've had with my Asus laptop [which is almost 3 years old] is that it can't read dvd movies anymore. I don't know why --- but honestly, I don't care so I've never bothered to fix it. Or look into it, it reads game cd's just fine.

Also don't let Best Buy set it up, but Asus has amazing tech support.

I have heard really good things about Asus but because it's more uncommon than other brands people seem to be trying to steer me away from it so it's good to have that vote of confidence.

Why shouldn't I let Best Buy set it up? Tell me more about that. I'm intrigued.
