Because you know your way with VitualDub and I assume avisynth, maybe try using it with the clip attribute ffmpegsource2? Just dump the contents of the downloaded file into your Avisynth plugin folder and it should work. To load a video script with the ffpegsource2 clip attribute for the first time you should be ready to wait a minute, while the vidfile get indexed and then you can either clip it in VirtualDub and savi it as avi or I use it liky any other avisynth script in Premiere. I went into a bit more detail on how I prepare my footage with avisynth for Premiere in this tut.

That's a nifty idea. I will certainly try this (and thank you for the link to your tut!). Thank you!

Have you tried doing it online? mediaconverter.org

Just a thought since this site will convert hundreds of types of files... Another is to give MPEG Steamclip a try. I admit I've never converted this type of file.

Good luck!

I haven't yet--will do that. Thank you! Streamclip doesn't seem to like Windows 7, I just can't get it to work :-/

I use converted MKVs all the time, and the only reason I am able to do so is FormatFactory, the loveliest freeware file-conversion program I ever did see. You do need to make sure the settings are how you want them, though, because the defaults are often limiting. Good luck!

I second the format factory idea. I converted a bunch of mkvs into good quality wmv files and used those in Sony Vegas. I can't use avi files in Sony Vegas, so I haven't tried converting into avi. Might work well for that too.

(Edit for dyslexic spelling.)

I've been using FormatFactory since it was recommended here and it works perfectly. :) Thanks!

I use AVS Video converter and convert to .avi files and they work in Sony Vegas. I know some people don't like using them, but I find its an alright file format for myself lol
