Just spent four days and nights in Amsterdam. It's picturesque, on a human scale, with no skyscrapers and a network of canals which are both scenic and functional. The little streets leading from one canal to the next, west of the centre, are full of pretty boutiques selling jewellery, door knockers, curtain tie-backs, vintage clothes etc. The city
