The stiff wind blowing off the prairies had teeth of ice, but Ben couldn’t be bothered to notice. He just stood there under the enormous oak in the courtyard, now bereft of leaves, its branches reduced to haunted dark fingers melting into the October night sky, and looked down at the letter in his left hand, slightly crumpled and sweaty from being ( Read more... )

“You’ll regret it if you don’t.”

Oh, Ben. He's such a sucker for that line. And I adore the idea of him going through the training and then putting up with the punishment just to get in that one good punch and salvage some of his dignity. So very Fraser.

Ouch, poor Fraser. Wonderful last line, so very true.

Lovely, in a sad way.

Yep, I used that line on purpose. Thanks for noticing. :-)

I too have a soft spot for Emo!Ben (I know, I know - we negate his pain with our sarcastic labels, but really. He's so emo) and this was a really good example of the way he gives in to melancholy and then allows people to exploit him. That "you'll regret it if you don't" works really well - it's an omnious line, and coupled with the cold prarie wind and the lonely setting of that moonlit courtyard I'm thinking something very bad (humiliating or painful) is in store for Ben at that party. Meep.

Fantastic stuff, as always.

I think so, too. This thing sat on my hard drive for ages because I wanted it to have a happy ending where he bonds with his troopmates at the party, but then when I dug it back out I said "OMG self, what were you thinking? Nothing good is going to happen with icy wind and inky darkness and Victoria lines!"

*blushes furiously* You are very kind.
