The Glass Castle

Finished The Glass Castle on the train back to Montreal.

At the beginning I was a little annoyed by this book, but I got over that quickly when I decided it wasn't important whether or not it was a true story because it was entertaining and that's why I read books.

I was expecting it to be a lot darker, but it wasn't. This was both good and bad. I didn't exactly want it to be a downer, but a lot of the serious subject matter was just shrugged off and never mentioned again. On the other hand, it was refreshing to read a memoir where someone didn't blame everything on their parents.

I wish it didn't end so abruptly and so weirdly. I felt like there was so much that wasn't said.

I also felt like it wasn't very well written. It felt like I was reading a first draft. The main ideas were just strung together with nothing really holding them in place. I feel like the reason why the book won awards is because the story was so outrageous and not because it was very well written. However, this gives me more hope that I will someday have something published if jotting down stuff you remember from your childhood is all it takes.

I liked it, but mostly because it was entertaining and an easy read. The more I think about it though, the more questions I have about its incompleteness.
