Another Stolen Meme

This one stolen from kirarakim. Yay for books!

Book next to your bed right now:
Predictably, The Phantom of the Opera. Also, the Bible and a new fitness book I bought the other week.

Favorite series:
Heh - I'm going to have to go with Harry Potter. They came along at just the right time for me, and have given me many happy hours and memories! :D They're very special to me.

Favorite book:
I love a lot of books, so it's hard to pick just one...If pressed, I can narrow it down to: Great Expectations, Wuthering Heights, Pride and Prejudice, and Les Miserables. (Not including Shakespeare in any of these answers, by the way.)

The one book you would have with you if stranded on a desert island:
Aside from the Bible I'd probably need to keep my spirits up? Probably Pride and Prejudice to keep me smiling! :D

Book/series you would take with you on a long flight:
Speaking from WAY more experience than any normal person should have, I usually take any dense sort of classic with a compelling/adventurous storyline. Gone With the Wind and Les Miz are favorites on the place. It's also fun to have a book that ends just about every chapter with a cliffhanger to keep you reading. In that category, Dan Brown's books are good, as are Agatha Christy's.

Worst book you were made to read in school:
The Autobiography of Malcolm X, Middlemarch, and Beloved.

Book that everyone should be made to read in school:
It might be nice to see a bit less focus on American and British lit (no matter how much I may like it!). It'd be nice to see some more French, German, and Russian authors (Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, Hugo, Kafka, Goethe, etc.) Also, one of the best books I read in college was "The Posthumour Memoirs of Bras Cubas" by Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis. "A Fine Balance" by Rohinton Mistry was also very good.

Book that everyone should read, period:
Heh - there are lots...but I think I will go with Great Expectations here. It has something for everyone, and is a perfect introduction to Dickens and humourous/sentimental Victorian writing.

Favorite character now:
I'll always love Pip and Joe Gargery and Magwitch, the Artful Dodgerand Fagin, Darcy and Elizabeth, Harry and Ron and Hermione (they're almost like friends of mine - we grew up together, you know!), Heathcliff and Cathy, Valjean and Javert, Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde, the Frankenstein Monster...Peter Pan is considerably more one-dimensional, but I love him dearly, too. (Sorry for all the lists, by the way - can't help myself!)

Favorite character as a kid:
Peter Pan, Harry Potter, Harvey Cheyne (Captains Courageous), Brian Robeson (The Hatchet), and Scarlett and Rhett (though I still have a special fondness for those two even now).

Best villain:
Captain Hook, Heathcliff, Javert, Fagin, the Frankenstein Monster, Mr. Hyde, and Clavicle Moundshroud (The Halloween Tree).

Favorite concept series:
Not sure what that means...

Favorite invented world:
Either LotR's Middle Earth or Harry Potter's wizarding world.

Most beautifully written book:
Suppose it depends on what you're looking for. Dickens, Austen, and occasionally Emily Bronte, all sparkle with wit. Dickens and Bronte also write some pretty beautiful descriptive narration, and also fling you into deep emotions effortlessly. And, weirdly enough, the first book I remember making an impression on me with regards to the quality of the prose was "The Halloween Tree" by Ray Bradbury.

Funniest book:
Pride and Prejudice makes me laugh...in non-fiction, I enjoyed Bill Bryson's "Notes from a Small Island" and Kate Fox's "Watching the English".

Scarily enough, I could do this entire meme just about Shakespeare...I think I'll spare you from that, though, unless someone is especially interested in hearing it. :D

Hope you're all having an excellent night f-listers!
