100 words: shield (with a special challenge)

I've seen jydog1  for three of the last four weekends, and he's only talking in 100 word paragraphs. "How are you?" I asked, and he proceeded to tell me... in exactly 100 words. Awkward. He was forced to grind to a halt as he tried to find exactly the right seven words to finish his story. Always the caring and devoted friend, I hope to alleviate his ( Read more... )

Shield - sci-fi story tallarn June 30 2009, 09:23:20 UTC
The starship rocked again as the pulsar fire slammed into it.

“Engines, disabled, hyperdrive, disabled, weapons, disabled…” droned the damage-report.

“Set collision course,” ordered the Captain. “There’s nothing else left. We can’t let them get through! We’re the last ship - let’s take some of them with us!” The thrusters sparked into life and the ship turned on it’s death-run.

“Shields won’t hold much longer!” reported his crew-mate. “Impact in five, four, three…” His voice cut-off with a scream as another torpedo impacted on the hull and blew up his console.

In space, no-one can hear you protect your world from human invasion.

As twilight fell she stood alone. They came for her.

She swatted aside an arrow with her shield, then charged. Her aggressiveness caught two of her foes by surprise and they fell immediately. Others tried to take her down but their blades could not touch the whirling dervish, and she dropped them one after another. The archer discovered that flight was futile. Finally she faced the king and a lone guard. The latter hesitated as she attacked, missing an open shot. His leader did not, and his aim was true. She fell, as did her kingdom.

Until next weekend, anyway.

As she stood there alone, awash in the sun's dying rays, Trevor though she looked like a warrior goddess. He watched agog as she tore a path through his friends, foam sword and shield mere blurs. When his king mumbled something under his breath that sounded like 'bitch' thoughts that dwelled in the realm of treason danced through his head.

Then she was before him, glowing, chest heaving, and their eyes met for an electric second. Her fatigue left him an open shot but he didn't take it.

Would she know he stayed his hand for her? Would she?

Stop that!
So you think that is funny young man, playing tricks on those slower or weaker than you. Get over here grandson. Now you listen to me while I tell you something.

You see this, this is what our family stands for; with it I have fought evil, protected the weak, and reassured the scared. It has a powerful magic but its primarily use is defense. Dungeon Master himself gave it to me. If you want to inherit it someday, then you must first earn it through respect, loyalty, and humility. Earn the right to someday be called
Cavalier.

Loved this one, by the way. You captured Eric's mix of obnoxiousness and honor. And snuck up on us with it, too.

At last! His invention was complete. Well... except for the name.

He paced the room. Names were tricky things. This one should be memorable, yet convey protection. By carefully exciting subatomic particles, the portable remote would create a controlled reaction that could raise even a two ton boulder into the air, dissipating the energy as sound waves so the explosions didn't ignite the invention itself. Sort of a Sonic Handheld Inflammable Explosive Lifting Device.

Aha! He scribbled one word on the whiteboard excitedly:

"BARRIER."

Excellent! Now, he needed words corresponding with its functionality with first letters spelling it out... Hmmmm...
