Watanuki kind of likes delicate things, and he never thought of butterflies as ominous until he met Yuuko. As a child he used to try to coax them onto his fingers, and trap the tiny ones in his hands to peer at them up close.
Yuuko says butterflies are signs of change, and Watanuki can't ever look at butterflies the same way again. But he still enjoys the butterfly garden set up by the older students in the far corner of the school grounds.
Doumeki, the jerk, ruins his time there by showing up while Watanuki is crouched cross-eyed over a swallowtail. "What do you want?" Watanuki asks without looking up.
Doumeki doesn't answer. "Why are you here?"
"I can be wherever I want." Watanuki refrains from screeching, since the swallowtail has just put out its proboscis and is probing the flowers for nectar.
"... It's pretty," Doumeki says, and Watanuki hears more than sees the jerk crouch down next to him to watch.
"... Yeah," Watanuki agrees, and he thinks it's the first time they've agreed on anything.
Funny, says the little Yuuko-voice inside his head, that it's about butterflies.
