In defence of fruitcake

When you are old(er), what do you think children will ask you to tell stories about?
I have no idea. Maybe about when I lived in Israel, if I start the ball rolling with a funny story or two.

This one is mainly for North Americans (I think this lot of questions comes from Canada).

I am pretty sure it's an American thing, all the jokes I've heard about them come from there. A good fruitcake is something completely different, of course :)

It's definitely American. They're missing out on a good thing. I don't think I've had a bad fruitcake, though sometimes I've had one with crap icing.

I am glad I don't live in America then, even the supermarkets round here can come up with a very edible version of fruitcake and Christmas cake.

Here too - I've bought both traditional dark cakes to ice myself, and throughout the year, a golden fruitcake that tastes as good as anything I'd make, my go-to for when I have to take something to a potluck. I can't say the same for other supermarket baked goods, like slices and cupcakes; most don't taste homemade at all. Maybe it's harder to go wrong with a fruitcake - unless you're an American. of course!
