I was bitten by yet another spider. This one is kind of nasty--of course I want to take pictures of it, but I will refrain.
Post a sentence (or two) from as many of your WIPs as you want, with no explanation attached.
01. Any conversation that starts with "How bad is it?" is probably going to lead to a hospital room.
Growing up, I overheard a lot of those kinds of conversations. In fact, on the phone that was usually the first thing my mother said. Well, the second thing. She was polite. She always said "Hello".
02. He's not a young man anymore, he tells me, but I know now that he could snipe a man from an obscene distance.
My secondhand information about his life is bare and my mind has to fill in the rest. The facts: we aren't related but he has always been in my life, and he taught me in childhood to call him “uncle”. He went to Vietnam. He served in the Marines with my fifth grade teacher. He came home as decorated in medals as he was in fresh scars.
And he never, ever talks about what happened.
03. He wasn't sure when he became obsessed with survival manuals. It crept up like a slow infection.
04. She exhales and looks at him with rheumy blue eyes, and again he wonders just how aware she actually is. Especially when her hand whips out-misses, and corrects itself in a split second to snatch his pen, and yet he must guide her hand to make her own signature.
05. Of course, things were different then. The gods lived up high on Olympus, peering down at the world as they sipped wine made from the honey of stars. When the sky was clear on a good day, they dripped blessings down on a few random lucky ones-and when they were bored they would yank away the good fortune, like a child first dropping sugar cubes on an anthill, then kicking it over to watch the chaos.
Things were different then, but the gods don’t change. It’s important you remember that.
06. She notices that the very real blood on the floor is frozen. She could skate on it if she wanted.
Instead, she goes to the deck, sits down and tucks her knees up under her chin. She listens to nothing at all.
Some of those are a couple of years old. Two of them are new. >> Hopefully it's not glaringly obvious which ones. Uh, thoughts? Those are always appreciated. ♥
