It's funny that you say this, while I have a pile of fabric I am handsewing in my lap.
I don't remember my first event. I don't remember the sca ever not being in my life. I remember growing up with this huge family of people who love and support me, even though there is no blood relationship.
For me, one of the many magical things about the SCA is youth combat. There is a particular young man, who is now about 15, who I remember teaching to fight at Pennsic when he was eight. He's from Aethelmearc, and every single pennsic, he runs up to me, laughs about how much taller he is than me, and shows me how much his fighting has improved since the year previous. He makes it a point to come to the teen party I hold, and I often see him volunteering around Pennsic, or helping people out. It's not just him, either. There is whole generation that grew up in the SCA, and reminds me at every event, how magical our group is.
I don't know if I ever fell in love with the SCA. It's more that I gradually grew to love and appreciate it in a more modest sense.
The SCA came into my life when svava took me up to that Crown thorsbaby won. That was pretty neat, but there were no fireworks.
I think my moment might have been when I showed up at Pennsic for the first time and an army of people I didn't know pounced on my car and unloaded it for me.
In general it's been the little moments that make me smile.
I came into the SCA to do the books. I guess the magic for me was when I realized that I finally found a place where I could be myself. :-) Everything else is just so much gravy. :-)
But I remember my first Pennsic...camped along the fence right beside Bazaar 1. It was about 7am of Opening Ceremonies of War Week and the entire battlefield across the road was covered in fog. The silence was intense. And then I heard the pipes coming up the road, muffled by the fog. And then I could just make out the spears and banners...just the tops.
Then Hafldan broke through the fog, piping in the Kingdom of Ealdormere. It was something out of my memories of a time I never actually experienced.

the magic: Being able to run around barefoot without an adult telling me not to.

Also, I love having the creative outlet.
