Apostrophes

Why is it that when I use apostrophes in my posts they only show as code? How can I get around this? I took all of them out of my previous post but when I typed words like I'm, aren't,  it's , etc. they do not show correctly, at least when I look at the post.

Or maybe I'm wrong and it's only a problem when I'm in edit mode?

They look fine to me. Maybe a browser setting that's getting in the way?
