I like going to the grocery store after work. The timing is just right. The sun is just starting to go down. Day eases into twilight ( Read more... )

I would be watching, photographing, and loving it all. Also, I probably would point and try to get people to watch with me. :) I LOVE bats! esp. flying foxes. did you know? the flying fox canactually fellate itself, having the longest phallus in mammalkind? funny, huh?

I tried photographing them yesterday, but all I got were faint, blurry black streaks :)

yeah, that happens when I try to get shots of the bats at our bat house. Try just keeping the camera focused on a spot they pass through frequently, and as soon as you see one, snap it. just make sure you have the steadiest possible camera, and if you can, keep your fStop low and your shutter speed where it'll stay open longer(I can't remember if it's high or low, being dyslexic, I would have to be looking at my book. Sorry!) In any case, keep trying, and you'll eventually get a good one or two.:)

They're pretty high up in the sky where they're passing overhead, and it's well into dusk when they start flying. Given my camera and my skill, I'm not sure there's much I can do with the aperture and shutter speed to get it :)

I may have to scope out trees where they hang out instead. I might snap the occasional ring-tailed possum as a bonus.

The best flying fox scene I ever saw was at the Sydney Botanical Garden last year. Dozens of bats roost in the eucalyptus trees during the day. There was one such tree that was largely lacking leaves, so the bats were clearly visible. There was a lone goth girl staring at the bats. I don't remember if she was photographing or not, but she definitely stood out as the only goth in about a kilometer radius :)

Anyway, even with my untrained eye, I could see that this lone goth girl standing under a lone tree whose branches were drooping with bats was a fantastic composition...but my camera was completely out of battery power. The tragedy!
