“I’m not making this up. Jack said none of us could go in there,” Amy says, trying to keep pace with him.

Koschei doesn’t answer her as he speeds along, which seems to unnerve her. Good. Let her be unnerved, if it means she hesitates long enough for him to get to the Doctor. However, when he turns the corner, Rory is blocking his way.

“Let me past,” he says to Rory. Surely Rory understands why he wants to see for himself what state the Doctor is in.

Rory shakes his head. “Can’t. Amy’s explained the quarantine?”

“I don’t care. I’ll stay in there, if I have to,” he says, moving to get around Rory.

Rory steps more directly in between him and the door, straightening to attention. “No, sir.”

He stares at Rory, astonished at first, then anger blooming underneath the surprise. Rory remains still, looking at him levelly, while Amy watches, anxious. It occurs to the Master that in a sheer contest of wills with the Last Centurion, winning is not a certainty. Trying to physically push past might not be wise, either. He takes a slow step back, ticking through other options in his mind.

Amy looks visibly relieved, although she’s smart enough to not take that concession as a invitation to move towards Koschei or touch him. She gives him a shaky smile. ‘“Can you do something for me?”

“What?” The men asked more or less simultaneously. Rory’s obliviously startled.

“You’re not plastic, you can’t guard the door all the time,” Amy mutters to her husband. Her attention jumps back to the Time Lord. “Promise me you won’t go in there before the Doctor says it’s ok. Please.”

Now his temper truly broke. Because, he’d been willing to listen. Amy needs something, for a moment, had overwritten everything else. This request felt like her using his affection and loyalty against him.

“Go to hell,” he says, voice flat. He registers her expression crumpling into hurt and Rory’s incredulous glare, but he’s too furious to care. For a second he considers cutting through to his goal by stunning them both. A headache is a justifiable consequence, isn’t it?

He can’t commit violence against the Doctor’s own, right outside the doors of the Doctor’s infirmary. Might as well spit in the Doctor’s face and then try to tell him it was for it own good.

Instead, he turns and stalks away deeper into the TARDIS, to burn off the rage and think.
