Canon Character and Series: Takano Miyo / Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni
In-Game Name: Miyo Takano
Age: 30
Gender: Female
Position & Ship: Doctor on Victoria II
Appearance: Miyo looks good and she knows it. In fact, she uses this to her advantage from time to time. She has long, natural blond hair. Her bangs are parted mostly to the sides of her face, with one, thick strand coming down across her forehead and the top of her nose. Her golden eyes are usually half closed, giving her a sultry or droopy look depending on how you at it.
Miyo’s attire consists of a fitting black dress that falls just above the knee. At her collar is a jabot attached with a green gem, and she wears a small, black cape over her shoulders. Completing the outfit is a black beret and a green ribbon tied across her collarbone in the form of a cross, and with a yellow cross-like clasp keeping it attached.
When working in the ship’s infirmary she will usually don a more traditional nurse outfit, though she has been known to wear her general attire while in the infirmary as well.
Personality: On the surface, Takano seems like a kind enough woman. She’s caring enough when treating crewmembers. But suddenly that smile, that sneer, will appear and you realize there’s something off about her. If you’re (un)lucky enough to hear her laugh, then that really just confirms it.
In reality, Miyo is cold, manipulative, and at times downright cruel. She’ll use anything to her advantage, even people. She really doesn’t care much about others at all. If she needs to use someone, perhaps even kill that person, in order to advance her goals then so be it. It’s a negligible loss. The completion of her grandfather’s research and her revenge takes a greater importance than anything or anyone. It is perhaps even more important than herself, since she has completely lost her sense of self in pursuit of the realization of this research. Any semblance of kindness is likely only a ruse. In truth, Miyo just likes to mess with others.
Because she is so intent on her goals, she’s liable to go a little crazy should anything get in her way. She will not allow anything to stop her, even if she has to resort to unorthodox methods.
Surprisingly, despite her grandfather’s research (or maybe because of it), she harbors a disdain for demihumans.
Abilities/Weapons: First off, she’s a doctor. Meaning that she can provide treatment to herself and those around her quickly and efficiently even in stressful situations.
She’s also manipulative as hell. If someone has information she wants she’ll do all she can to get it out of them, whether by simple verbal manipulation, or even going as far as to blackmail and extortion.
She also usually carries some kind of weapon concealed on her body. One can never be too careful, after all.
Weaknesses: Miyo is not physically strong and could easily be overpowered by those means. This is why she attempts to rally those around her for protection and support, though her manipulative ways may even make those people distant from her. While she can operate a firearm, she is not extremely well-versed in its use. Her accuracy is not exactly on the mark.
Miyo can also be a little over-zealous in her plans, and if things aren’t going her way she tends to get sloppy, leaving herself dangerously open. If backed into a corner, she will likely become erratic and lose control over her actions, making her easy to bring down.
History: Miyo Takano was originally born Miyoko Tanashi in Claiborne. Her family was not rich, but they got along well enough. Her mother and father had come from Ivona by choice to act as doctors to the. Claiborne, as a military outpost, was probably the safest they could feasibly come into the Badlands, and even that was a stretch. Even so, Miyoko was happy and lived a good life as long as her parents protected her.
This lasted until the age of ten, when things drastically changed. The Ivonian military expanded its facilities from time to time, and it was on such an occasion that both Miyoko’s happened to be passing by one of the construction sites. In a tragic turn of events, the scaffolding in one section had been constructed incorrectly and came crashing down upon her parents as they passed by the site.
Miyoko was rushed to the scene to see her parents, but it was evident that they would not last much longer. Since she had no other relatives, her father told her to find a man named Hifumi Takano, a doctor and her father’s mentor.
As could be predicted, Miyoko’s father passed on. Miyoko was sent to a social counselor to sort out where she should go now. She told him exactly what her father told her: that she has no other living relatives and that her father told her to find a Hifumi Takano. But since he is of no relation to Miyoko, she is sent to an orphanage in the area.
When Miyoko arrived at the orphanage, an attendant greeted her kindly. However, as soon as those who brought her there left, the man reverted back to his stern manner, dragging Miyoko into the building. Thus began her days of torture.
The orphanage was the type of place parents tell their children about to keep them from misbehaving. The children there were constantly whipped and beaten for the smallest of mistakes and Miyoko feared for her life daily.
One night, Miyoko and her fellow orphans decided that they couldn’t take it anymore. Stories were told of a good orphanage, where the children consider the caretaker to be like their mother. They had heard of another group that had escaped, however, one of the children was recaptured. They knew then that the only way they too would be able to escape was to work together and hope that they weren’t the one who got caught.
So in the middle of the night the children got a hold of the key and attempted to escape. But as they were working with the lock on the door the caretakers of the orphanage awoke and started to pursue them. The door finally burst open and Miyoko and the other children ran out into the night.
They were all quickly separated and Miyoko ran off amongst the vacant buildings, pursuers quick on her heels. At one point she was even captured and bit off her captor’s finger in an attempt to get away.
Running again, Miyoko took refuge under an overhanging for a short time. It was raining heavily and lightening flashed all around her. She screamed for some god to just kill her, but instead a bolt of lightening hit the building right behind her. Since she won her “bet” with God, she pleaded for Him to save her instead if He wouldn’t kill her.
Just then she heard her pursuers and once again fled. She ran through the town, banging on doors and pleading to be let in. All kept their doors shut, until one door opened and Miyoko fell through the doorway, leaving her pursers behind.
By a strange turn of events (which Miyo later thought to be fate), it turned out to be the hom of Hifumi Takano. She pleaded with him, recounting her father’s last words to her. Realizing the plight she was in, he agreed to take her in. Leading her to a bed for the night, he asked if he could call her Miyo. She quickly accepted her new name.
In a few months Miyo had already settled in her new life as she began to help her ‘grandfather,’ Hifumi, with his research. His life’s work had been spent researching the origins of demihumans and other such abnormal human abilities. He was leading to a breakthrough with his research into the government’s old practices and the use of mana crystals. He had also made a link between certain types of viruses and diseases with the prevalence of demihumans. Miyo quickly became engaged in his research and helped him in any way she could.
When the first draft of his report was ready, it was presented to a group of government officials. They scoffed at the idea as a bunch of rubbish. Their government performing experiments that led to demihumans? Viruses? What rubbish!
In one last showing of their disapproval for Hifumi’s work, they threw the report on the floor and crumpled it beneath their feet. But little Miyo threw herself at the feet of the government officials, trying to save her grandfather’s precious work. They threw her off and after a stern word left.
Miyo never forgot that moment, even long after her grandfather passed away. She inherited his work and his legacy, continuing his research as her own life’s work. When she brought his work again to the government officials she thought she had gained some ground as they showed signs of accepting her theories, but only a few months later she was kicked to the curb as they lost their need for her.
Devastated, her grandfather’s research having been rejected for the second time, Miyo did not know where to turn. She became angry, bitterly angry. Those that would not accept her grandfather’s research… they should all just die! In a rage, she tore apart the apartment where she was currently residing in Bellcius. She would make them all pay!
So, the next morning Miyo regained her composure and marched right down to enlist. She had some skills as a doctor from her parents and Hifumi, and she had often been a doctor as a sort of cover job. Now this worked perfectly to her advantage, securing her a place on the Victoria II. Now she intends to climb the ranks and destroy the corrupt officials who trampled over her grandfather’s work from right below them…
