[Locals] Beer Tasting!

Mar 27, 2010 10:49

Next Friday's beer tasting will have a "Red Ale" theme. I picked up a couple of beers on the way home from my Saturday morning banking... Avery Redpoint Ale and Bell's Amber Ale.

I love symbolism and the ritual of my Friday beer tastings has given me a chance to let loose with it, within certain constraints.

I've not had either of these, though somehow I've rarely had red ales. Please let me know how these are!

And they tend to be quite good. Not really my style, since they tend to be a bit on the "lighter side" relative to my favorites (i.e. stouts and Belgian ales) but they are generally quite good.

I'm hopin' I'm not overlapping with beers I've had before at this point... 'cause, honestly, I've forgotten all of the beers I've had over the years. :oP

I seem to recall the reds I've had having a bit of a smokey essence to them? I prefer stouts and Belgians, too, though pilsners and lagers are quite good as well.

I'm fortunate when it comes to recalling the beers I've had - for some things I have a near photographic memory. ^^

How many different beers have you had then?

I've had somewhere in the neighborhood of 100-150, given that I've had two per week for a little over a year... plus incidental beers that I've had. I think I might cut off beer tasting before too much longer since I'm actually forgetting stuff, and it defeats the point if I'm going to just forget a beer when I try a new one. Plus I have a wide enough repertoire to impress most folks.

Maybe I'll try wine next... or just let the hobby flounder in favor of something a little more practical, e.g. programming.

Bell's Amber Ale - Tastes very beer-like. Lots of hops and malt flavor with a bit of a spicy aftertaste and a hint of apples and cinnamon. This is the beer I think of when I think of a conventional (red/brown) ale. I give it an A-.

Avery Redpoint Ale - Heavily carbonated head with a strong hop bouquet. It's tasty with a clinging bitter aftertaste. I give it a B+.
