Who: Kratos and Raine - with a couple brief cameos by Goku
What: Hakkai and Raine return from a date for some hot cocoa and talk of exspheres.
When: Wednesday, December 3rd, 2008
Where: an inn somewhere on the way West
Why: Because this was too amusing an idea to pass up on logging
Warnings: Um... none?
Hakkai and Raine had once again ventured to New York City, in a fandom that was vastly safer than either of their own - and also had a lot more to do, this time to go to the Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony at Rockefeller Center. It had been fun, and they'd gone ice skating afterwards. Then they went back to the inn where the Ikkou was staying, so Hakkai could make his special recipe hot chocolate for them.
"That was fun," Hakkai said, as he took off his coat and set it on the back of the chair before offering to help Raine off with hers.
Raine allowed him to help, nodding in agreement. "I'm growing rather fond of New York City. And the Christmas Tree was stunning, or perhaps it was because I've never really seen one in person."
"You hadn't?" Hakkai asked. "I'm afraid I haven't read up on the holiday customs of Sylvarant. I've been too fascinated by reading up on the form of magic used there." He grinned and ran a hand nervously through his hair.
She nodded again, smiling. "Last year was the first we heard of it. Colette ran around, desperately trying to give everyone presents. It didn't help that she couldn't speak at the time," she explained quickly before adding, "Ah, you've been reading up on the magic? It's quite different from your fandom, if I'm not mistaken."
"Gojyo had told me a bit about it, but that only piqued my curiosity. I did a lot of reading when that whole body swapping incident happened. I had a lot of time and not much to do with it. But yes, it is different. The basic principles of it are the same, but the execution is very different." He made his way over to the counter and started gathering the ingredients for the hot cocoa.
"Ah, I see. I assume since you've done a little research that you know complicated magic requires the use of an Exsphere? I'm fairly certain they don't exist in your world. Oh, and Elven blood is also a requirement--Kratos and Zelos are the exceptions, although it's related to their time with Cruxis." She pulled out a chair and took a seat while waiting for the cocoa.
"Yes, I think Gojyo had mentioned that, too. We don't have exspheres or anything like that. At least I don't. There's more than one kind of magic in this world, and I can't say I know about most of the kinds. I've mostly focused my study on what directly applies to my own ability. I've never seen an exsphere," he paused a moment. "You don't happen to have one on you, do you? I hadn't noticed it, but I thought you'd have one."
"Yes, I wouldn't be able to use my healing arts so efficiently if I didn't have one. Mine is out of sight. It didn't seem necessary to place it in plain view, as others tend to do." She sighed. "It can sometimes draw unwanted attention to have one out in the open."
"I can imagine," he replied, thinking of what the limiters on his ears hid from the world. "Sometimes it's best not to draw too much attention to oneself."
"Yes, especially since normal people aren't supposed to have them. Exspheres aren't that common."
"Would it be okay for me to see it?"
"Of course," she said shortly, hardly thinking anything of it. Climbing to her feet, she paused for a moment. "Please excuse me for a moment." She turned her back to him, slipping her hands under the hem of her dress and pulling the stockings down to her feet.
"Ah, no problem." When Raine had said to excuse her for a moment, Hakkai hadn't expected it to involve removing her stockings. Perhaps it was on her ankle and he could hardly blame her for not wanting to ruin a good pair of stockings just to show it off.
Turning back around, Raine sighed. "I'm afraid it's in a rather peculiar spot." Lifting the part of the dress up her leg, she revealed the Exsphere in its place--on her right thigh.
"Oh," Hakkai said, a surprised look on his face, "That is a peculiar spot." It was a moment before he spoke or moved again. "Ah, would you mind sitting down? It might be easier to look at that way."
"Yes, of course," she complied, moving to the chair she'd recently vacated and reclaiming her seat.
"Thank you," he said, stepping over to her. If Gojyo knew about this, he could only imagine the teasing he'd get for it as he lowered himself between Raine's legs to examine her... exsphere. He carefully avoided looking anywhere but at the small object. "Hmmm," he said, leaning in close. "Did it hurt?"
"Did what hurt? Attaching it to the skin? No, it's completely painless. They can be quite dangerous without a key crest, though," she replied, as if speaking to one of her students.
"Yes, I had had read about the dangers of removing one that doesn't have a keycrest," he said with a frown. Raising a finger, he pointed at it, "Ah, do you mind if I..." he trailed off feeling slightly embarrassed asking about touching something lodged in her thigh.
"Ah," she started, feeling somewhat embarrassed herself, but remaining composed. She trusted him. "It's fine. I probably won't feel it anyway."
"Really?" he asked, running his finger over it's smooth surface. He tilted his head to the side, just as Jeep flew over and perched himself on the table. "Kyuu~? ♥" the dragon asked, trying to see what Hakkai was looking at.
Looking for a midnight snack (or five), Goku made his way out of his room and stumbled into the hallway, meaning to head into the kitchen. Bleary eyes caught the light peeking from underneath Hakkai's door, and he opened it. Maybe he could cook for him? Unabashed, Goku allowed himself inside... and into the strange scene before him.
"Mm, well, not too much," she replied, feeling a small pressure from the Exsphere pushing onto her leg as he touched it.
"Mmm," Hakkai hummed in response, not noticing the two extra sets of eyes on them.
"WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOIN'?!"
Startled, Raine looked up to see Goku standing in the doorway. "Ah? Goku?" she asked innocently.
Hakkai peeked out from between Raine's legs, "Uh, did you need something?"
Goku looked back and forth, first between Hakkai and Raine, and then adding Jeep to the mix, "I-I-I'M SORRY! I DIDN'T MEAN T'... UH... UH..." he continued to stammer, quickly grabbing Jeep, "TH' TWO OF YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED. YEAH. IN FRONT OF JEEP AN' EVERYTHIN'!!!"
Raine blinked, raising an eyebrow. "What?"
"Ah, Goku it's not-" Hakkai started to say, but Goku didn't seem like he was going to stop and listen to reason right now.
He continued to hold his near death grip on Jeep, even going as far as to bring up one hand to cover the dragon's eyes. "AN'. UH. LOCK YOUR DOOR." A few moments passed. "...OKAY BYE." And so, Goku shot out of the room. Listen carefully, and one could make out the whines of "SANZOOOOO!!!"
Raine stared at the spot Goku had just been for a moment before sighing. "I was not expecting that." She paused, hearing him whine. "Is he going to Sanzo?"
"I wasn't expecting that, either. And it sounds like that is where he's headed," Hakkai said. He glanced up at Raine, "Though I can't blame him for jumping to conclusions. It's not as though he knew I was looking at your exsphere."
She sighed again. "Considering hardly anyone even knows where it is, I can't blame him either."
"I suppose I should get back to making that hot cocoa... and perhaps a snack to take to Goku later." He smiled, albeit a bit sheepishly, as he stood up.
She smiled back, pulling her dress back down. "Yes, thank you. And I'm sure Goku would appreciate that, as well." She climbed to her own feet, too, to fully pull her pantyhose back on.
Hakkai nodded and made his way back toward the counter, stealing a glance as she bent over to pull up the pantyhose. "You're welcome," he said, as he turned away from her, busying himself with the hot cocoa.
Standing back up and not noticing where a certain someone's eyes were, she pulled the stockings back on as subtly as possible. Adjusting her dress, she looked over towards Hakkai. "Do you need any help?"
"Ah, I think I'm fine. The recipe is rather secret. I wouldn't want to spoil the surprise for you." He looked over his shoulder and smiled.
She let out a small sigh of disappointment but knew the importance of secret recipes, and so she smiled back. "All right."
"You can help with the snack for Goku, though," he replied. Several minutes later he was putting the ingredients away while the mixture heated on the stove to a perfect temperature, steam rising in swirls above the liquid.
Raine had taken a seat again, legs crossed, as she waited patiently for the hot cocoa. She could smell the aroma, and it was making her mouth water. On top of that, she couldn't wait to help with the snacks later. Goku seemed a healthy eater. He'd probably be willing to try some new things...
Hakkai poured the hot cocoa into two mugs, topping them with some chocolate shavings and a sprig of mint each. "Here you go," he said, setting one in front of Raine before sitting down across from her.
She lightly wrapped her fingers around the mug, inhaling the smell of the chocolate. "It smells delicious. Thank you."
"You're welcome," Hakkai said. He took a sip, pleased with how well it had turned out.
Raine took a sip of the hot cocoa, as well. "Mmm. It was worth the wait," she said, smiling. She took another small sip. "Did you have anything in mind for Goku's snack? I know he likes to eat..."
"Eating could be considered his hobby," Hakkai said with a laugh before taking another drink. "I was thinking something sweet yet savory. Do you have any suggestions?"
She tapped a finger to her chin, a small sparkle in her eye. "Perhaps a caramel coated steak with chocolate sauce...?"
"That sounds... intriguing," Hakkai said, forcing a smile from behind his cup. "Perhaps we should put the caramel and chocolate sauce on the side?"
She might have stopped paying attention. "Perhaps some vanilla frosting on top before the caramel..."
"Ah, well... why don't you make that and I'll make something to go with it as a side dish."
"All right!" Used to being denied the ability to do what she wanted in the kitchen, she happily agreed.
After they finished their cocoa, Hakkai went over to the fridge and began pulling out ingredients, making quite the large side dish to go with Raine's steak surprise.
Raine totally went nuts with the steak, putting on all kinds of sweet and savory toppings, and who knows what else. In the end, it kind of looked like a rainbow.
"Ah, should we take it to him?" Hakkai asked, hefting the basket that contained his "side" dish off the counter.
Raine gleefully lifted her own tray. "Of course!"
He led the way down the hall to Goku's room, knocking lightly before peeking in. What he saw and overheard wasn't quite what he expected. Hakkai barely managed to hold back a chuckle and motioned for Raine to be quiet, waiting for Goku to notice them.
"An' then. Uh. That's how babies are made, an' that's what Hakkai an' Raine were doin'. Uh. Any questions?" Goku whispered to Jeep, hoping the dragon would absorb his every word.
Raine bit her lip, trying to hold back a small laugh and balance the food.
Hakkai decided to knock again, opening the door wider and pretending as though he hadn't heard any of that. "Ah, I hope I'm not interrupting, but I thought you might have wanted a snack, so we brought you a little something."
Goku nearly jumped into the air when Hakkai entered, but calmed down immediately at the word 'snack', "R-really?"
Raine proudly held out her dish for him to see, too.
"Really." Hakkai's eyes subtly darted towards Raine's concoction and he mouthed 'Sorry' to Goku.
Goku's own eyes narrowed into golden slits. Sorry? Was this a bribe? Then again... he sniffed, his sensitive nose picking up something peculiar about the snack, but still blinded by how damn good it smelled as well. His stomach growled in agreement, "Well, okay! Thanks!"
Raine looked positively thrilled at having someone so willing to try her food. She'd worked so hard on it, too! "I hope you enjoy. Hakkai said you enjoyed sweet and savory flavors~!"
"You're welcome," Hakkai said, setting down the basket in front of Goku and then taking the plate from Raine and placing it on top of the basket. "I'll be needing Jeep to take Raine home tonight."
Without thinking, Goku asked, "Y'mean she's not stayin' over? That's cold."
Raine blinked. "I do need to get home. I'm sure Genis will be worried if I don't return."
"I'm sure he will be. It would be one thing if he wasn't expecting you to return..." Hakkai said, not bothering to continue the train of thought before turning his attention back to Goku. "What you walked in on and what you believe you walked in on are two entirely different things."
"Say wha?" Goku paused, treat about to enter his mouth.
Raine chose to ignore Hakkai's first few words and nodded in agreement with the latter half of his sentences. "You misunderstood entirely. Although I can understand why you did."
Hakkai had the decency to look embarrassed about that. "I can imagine had anyone walked in they would have mistaken what was going on."
"So you weren't...?" Goku still eyed the two suspiciously. It wasn't like Hakkai to go ahead and do 'those things', but still, just a year of traumatic experiences of the sexual kind were enough to make Goku wary of anyone nowadays.
Raine sighed. "No, we weren't. Have you heard of Exspheres? I have one; it's located on my leg, and Hakkai wished to see it."
Hakkai nodded, "It was purely scientific." Which as soon as it left his mouth was probably not the best way to put it, but his intentions for seeing the exsphere truly had been that.
"Well... if y'say so." Goku finally conceded. "Anyway. Thanks for th' snack!" He lifted said morsel to his lips and, with the grace of a five year old gobbled it down, but not without a strange face. "Uh... what didja put in there?"
Raine's face lit up. "I'm so glad you asked! There was quite the list of ingredients--actually, I'm not entirely sure I could name them all off..." she trailed off, as if thinking on just what exactly she'd put on the steak.
Once again, Hakkai mouthed 'Sorry' to Goku before speaking. "And in the basket you'll find a few sides to go with Raine's sweet and savory steak."
"...This's steak?"
Raine's face went blank. "Yes. With toppings." **
"I'm sure the steak was delicious," Hakkai said, reassuringly. Then pointedly he added, "Wasn't it, Goku?"
Goku caught the hint, "Uh. Yeah! Haha! I was just so surprised since it tasted....gros...GREAT! Great!"
She wasn't stupid, and she caught the slip up. However, as she had caused him some unintentional trauma earlier, she let it slide. "I'm glad you enjoyed it," she said, her voice probably unintentionally icy.
"We should probably get going," Hakkai said, noticing the sudden change in Raine's tone. "It's getting late." He motioned for Jeep and the dragon flew over and past them, heading back to Hakkai's room. "You ready, Raine?"
Sighing, Raine nodded. "Yes, it's probably later than I realized."
"Aheh... uh... sorry." Goku scratched the back of his head, "Uh. G'night!"
"Good night," Hakkai said, turning away from Goku and reaching for Raine's hand. As they walked down the hall, he gave a gentle squeeze and smiled. "Perhaps it wasn't quite the right combination of toppings, but I'm sure it'll be great with a little tweaking."
Raine pouted a little, but at least he wasn't insulting her food. Like everyone else did. It wasn't like it actually was poison. She squeezed his hand back. "There was more I wanted to try with it..." she confessed.
"Ah, well, how about you write it all down and perhaps with a little trial and error we can make a stellar recipe out of it." Hakkai stepped into his room and grabbed their coats, Jeep settling down on his shoulder after he'd put his coat on. He helped Raine into hers and smiled. "Sound like a plan?"
She smiled back happily, enjoyed at the prospect. She adjusted her coat comfortably and replied, "Yes, that sounds marvelous."
"Excellent," he said, leaning in to kiss her, a quick brush of lips before a more solid kiss. "Mmm, let's get you home before the carriage turns back into a dragon," he said with a laugh.
She'd kissed him back before nodding. "And we wouldn't want that, now would we?" she said, the corners of her mouth turned up in a half a smile.
"No we wouldn't. It'd make for a very uncomfortable ride."
With a totally straight face, she adds, "And it'd be troublesome for Jeep."
"Just a little." They headed outside and after Hakkai was certain no one was watching, Jeep transformed and he helped Raine into the passenger seat. Once he was in the driver's seat it was only moments before they were on their way to Sylvarant.
