The partnership that can withstand anything, the man who will lay down his life for her, yes indeed he is the standard.
He isn't Superman though, he can't catch bullets.
Angela likes to refer to him as the man of steel. He certainly looks the part, yes. It is not every day one finds a specimen of masculine superiority, a perfect example of natural selection such as Booth. Even Brennan agrees that the singular qualities that contribute to his moral fibre give him alpha male status in the hierarchy that governs society.
He isn’t Superman though, he can’t catch bullets. The speed, the agility, the power; it’s all part of the job description. Leaping in the way of flying bullets, it takes a certain kind of man to do such a thing. It takes a certain amount of courage too. Nothing can rationalise the unselfish, almost random act of taking a bullet for someone, but he has done it often enough, almost always without a second thought. Brennan knows by now that rationalisation is not really a big part of his psyche.
In his experience, taking a bullet for someone it forges a bond between two people. In his experience one ought to be thanked for the trouble. All his experience falls short when it comes to Temperance Brennan however. There is nothing ordinary about her, to assume her reactions to be so is a rooky mistake.
He almost died in her arms one time; a bullet incidentally. He shouldn’t have been surprised then that instead of feeling relief at his safe deliverance, she punched him in the nose, when it turned out he wasn’t dead after all. He didn’t deserve the assault, but he understands why she did it. It showed him she cared more than her tears ever would. Him and Bones, they are partners, they get each other; most of the time at least.
Bones, she operates according to her own set of rules, it’s always black and white with her. Quest for the truth that is what drives her and although he wishes sometimes that she saw the world through his eyes, he wouldn’t change her for the anything. She has heart, although one might not see it and with Seeley Booth that goes a long way.
The job, being an FBI special agent, he doesn’t do it for the glory or the girls, certainly not for the money, it’s his redemption and she helps him find peace every day. He can’t really remember a time before her now or he doesn’t care to. He wonders now if he would want to do this without her.
They are Scully and Mulder, Starsky and Hutch but mostly he likes it that they are Booth and Brennan. She wouldn’t understand the references anyway. For a genius she sure has her moments. He thinks he might love her more for that.
No he doesn’t want to be Superman. Catching bullets would certainly be useful in his line of work, he wouldn’t say no to the flying part either but trading in Bones for Louis he doesn’t think he can do that.
