My partner has a yearly weird food party, and, as usual, my problem with what to bring is overchoice. This year, I finally own a copy of Square Meals by Jane and Michael Stern (who are perhaps better known for Road Food). I have pined and hunted for this book since the early 90s, only to discover that the used copies of the unrevised edition are

My library used to have a copy of this and I checked it out many times with great delight. :) I really should order a copy!

Since I'm not a fan of Twinkies, I'm going to try this recipe with just plain sponge cake (pound cake).

Shredded Wheat Stroganoff

I'm guessing that the shredded wheat is supposed to substitute the beef or whatever meat you use. Wasn't there a meat shortage (among other things) during WWII?
