I've recently had great advice from several different people to look at yearbooks for inspirational vintage hair pictures. As a technophile my first thought was not the local library but the Internet and so I bring you...
Ohio University's Digitalized Yearbooks!
I would consider this one of the BEST references ever. OU admitted women even in
1892 so the pictures span all decades of the 20th century and the women were active in the university allowing multiple shots of them doing a variety of activities.
From Hockey in 1925,
to writing in the school paper in 1943
While places like
Emory University also have on-line yearbooks, they only started to formally admit women in the 1950s and they definitely would not have pictures like this:
The picture quality can vary from year to year depending on the condition of the book but the archives are good at noting the overall condition. A useful tool is also their different options to view the books including EPUB, Kindle, and PDF. If you only want to really look at one or two pages and enlarge them, I found "Read Online" very useful as you can then right-click and save the page without downloading the entire book which is a hefty file.
Have fun!
