Making a hair set last?

Hi ladies! So this week I made my first foray into wet sets with foam rollers. Today's set came out great IMHO and I'll post pictures later, but on to my question: how to make it last ( Read more... )

I've never really thought about the conditioner aspect before, so I'm not sure on that point. I, like so many others, use Lottabody to set my foam rollers. I set it dry and spray lottabody on each chunk of hair before I curl it. I usually can get 2 to 3 days out of a set, but the third day is never as curly as the first day. I do sometimes either quickly put my curlers or pin curl clips back in at night (it's much faster once it's already curly as the hair wants to go in the curler instead of fighting it). That helps to keep the curl better, and it really doesn't take anywhere near as long as it does the first time I set my straight hair. I have no idea how anyone makes a set last a week. My hair just starts to feel too gross for me by the 4th day, and I have to wash it for the sake of my own sanity.

I should have mentioned that I do use Lottabody with my sets.

Re-clipping the curls before going to bed is a great idea! Will definitely have to do that, especially on the side of my head that I sleep on, which seems to get the most destroyed overnight.

I have not posted before, but I know how my great grandmother got hers to stay. She would set with setting lotion (lottabody) the first night and leave till morning and style, the second night she would pretty much wrap the style down tight to her head after misting lightly with water, she had to do some slight restyling around the front in the morning with a little bit of water and a few clips. She repeated the same the third night and just added a hat or other hair decoration for the third day to disguise the crown a bit since it had gone flattish. I have tried this technique myself and it worked pretty well till I got to day 3 when I think it was more my hair being long and really thick that all I got was a kind of 60's flip out of it rather than the 40's look I was going for

So she'd mist before putting it back up? Hua. That might work. It would have to be paired with nightly re- setting. Though the subsequent sets would take less and less time.

well, according to my mom (who set her grandmothers hair often) she didn't reset it, just sorta flattened the curl to her head like bobby-pin curls without the pins and wrapped, not sure how else to explain it, I have done it and it works ok on my thick hair but seemed to work much better on her thinner finer hair. The mistin was just barely moist, like on a really foggy day type mist
