Title: Come to play
Rating: G
Pairing: Qmi/Kyumi
Disclaimer: Last time I checked, I didn't own the boys
Summary: Zhou Mi is the new boy in the neighbourhood
The shirt he's wearing is getting tiny, the fabric shrinking after every wash, fading in color. Around his neck it feels a little funny, but he's gotten used to it, and the way others can see his tummy if he lifts his arms even a little. He likes the shirt, it's blue in color and has the logo of Batman printed to it. Usually his mom makes him wear shirts that are for big boys, because he is growing so fast and the clothes get small in way too short amount of time. But he still likes the shirt he's now wearing. The best thing about it is that his dad brought it from one of his business trips. Was it Hong Kong or Taiwan, Zhou Mi can't remember because dad is often gone, but he always remembers to bring something with him. Last time, he got a nice new little car. It's shiny and black and looks like a car some secret agent could use. And even if it's tiny, it has taken Zhou Mi to many unbelievable adventures, like the time the Yeti chased him and Ren on the world's most dangerous mountain ever.
Zhou Mi has now lived in South Korea for almost half a year. He knows some of the language, as Lee-seonsaengnim teaches him every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. He can be proud of himself, because even though the big kids don't really understand him, he already comprehends most of what they are saying. Learning Korean is hard, when you don't have a friend to practise with, but Zhou Mi thinks he can manage. Mom says he is the bravest boy of the whole China, and mom is always right. So maybe he is the bravest boy in China, but now they are in Korea and Zhou Mi can't help but feel a little lonely as he pushes the little toy car down the slide and watches it slow pace on the sandy ground. He slides after it, and remembers to clean its tires from sand carefully as he finds the precious toy half-buried in the sandlot.

Kyuhyun can already tell others how old he is. Mom has taught him; if he puts his thumb against his palm and sticks the other fingers up, they can see his age. He's not too sure how much is that, but it makes them smile so he guesses he's almost like a big boy already. Kyuhyun is a bit jealous to his sister Ahra, who already goes to school.
But they tell Kyuhyun that one day, he will grow up too, and then he won't have to wear overalls when it gets colder in winter, or have to have granny or the neighbour's lady or mom to watch after him when he goes out to play. But now, now he will have to wait, until he grows so big.
He plops himself down on the ground, under the wooden park table where he is safe from the world. It's a nice table, big enough for a few kids to sit under it, and Kyuhyun comes often to play there. He and Ahra, unlike Donghae, who lives in their neighbour, don't have a fancy treehouse where they could play. Dad promised they might get one someday, maybe when Kyuhyun too, would grow a little. Now it's too dangerous, he says. But Donghae has let him in the treehouse, secretly, without neither of their mothers knowing. It was fun, and not dangerous at all and they played with Donghae's fancy toys until it was dinner time and Kyuhyun's mom found them. Donghae is a big boy, but he still likes to play with Kyuhyun every now and then. Most often he has school though, or homework. Or the other big boys from school want to play with him, and Donghae goes. Then Donghae is stupid and Kyuhyun won't like him because he would like to have Donghae to play with him, and only with him. But instead, Donghae deserts Kyuhyun and goes out there to play where Kyuhyun cannot go. It hurts a little, but Kyuhyun doesn't like to play with stupid anyway, so it's okay. It's okay.
So Kyuhyun wants to grow up as quick as possible, so he can get an exciting treehouse too, and play with Donghae and Ahra's friends, and not always be left alone.

Zhou Mi clutches the little metal car against his rapidly moving chest; there are big boys in the park, and they make him a little nervous. Mom has said he can go to the park, because they live so close, but Mimi has to promise one thing. Never go further than where you can see home, never cross the road alone. Zhou Mi has been careful, he has only played in the park. But the big kids are scary, and loud, and now Zhou Mi doesn't like it anymore. They act like adults, and three out of five are even smoking cigarettes. Zhou Mi kind of wants to go somewhere else to play. One of them has shouted something to him, and he's not sure what it is, because his heart races like a rabbit and it makes it hard to think about the words that roll funny off his tongue. It's all unfamiliar to him again.
So he does what feels like the most safe option and runs. He has gangly limbs, and they're a little longer than what would make it easy for him to control his movements, and so he's a bit clumsy. It doesn't take him more than twenty steps to fall over, and scratch his knees. The pain shoots up his nerves, but he decides he won't cry. Big boys don't cry, after all. Still, sobs make him tremble violently, as he stands up, that breath shaky and eyes glistening with unshed tears. He has lost his car when he dropped it as he stumbled, and that is the last thing that gets those tears falling.

Kyuhyun has seen what just happened, because the big boys scare him too. It got him jumpy when one of them hollered how shouldn't little boys like you be watching cartoons at this time of the day. At first he had thought they had shouted at him, and because Kyuhyun doesn't talk to big boys, because they might be strangers, he only hid better behind the chairs that make up the walls of his little cottage.
He sees the other boy run, run to where he is hiding, and then fall. The big boys are laughing, and Kyuhyun would like to say something back at them. He can hear a soft clear 'cling' as something hits the metallic leg of the table. Quick, he takes notice that it's a little toy car, prettier than what he has ever seen. Not even Donghae has this pretty toys. His cars, like Kyuhyun's, are plastic and come in funny, maybe a little faded colors. So maybe it's no surprise that he doesn't just ogle at the little car, but closes his hand over it, the cool metal warming in his small, chubby hands.
”Hey! That's my!”, he hears a broken shout, and the boy with raven black hair (just like his) who has been kneeling not too far away from him, rushes now to Kyuhyun. His shorts are dusty, the pale skinny legs scratched, just like his palms and chin, but he doesn't seem to care. He's staring at Kyuhyun, a stubborn pout jutting his lower lip. The dark eyes are stone-cold, but Kyuhyun is still not afraid. The boy looks older than him, but his face is dirty, from dust and tears, and his nose is runny. Kyuhyun knows he doesn't look like that, and for a moment, he feels like he's older of them two.
”That's my!” the boy repeats, and now Kyuhyun hears the funny accent, it has a tange of something else, and the words he utters just don't really make all that much sense.
He watches how a new bout of tears breaks through, and the other boy swipes his eyes to his forearm quick as though Kyuhyun wouldn't see if he did it fast enough. So he hands the car back to him, accompanied with the wise words of ”It's 'that's mine'”, because that's just how it goes.

Zhou Mi turns seven the next year, and then he will start school. But not yet, now he still has time to play with Kui Xian, and Ahra too. He knocks the door, and when mom Cho comes to open, he greets the woman with a wide smile and runs inside. He could tell where is the room even if he walked with eyes closed. Because he's just that good, and he and Kui Xian play a lot together. So much actually, that Zhou Mi hasn't had the time to miss Ren and China so much anymore.
He finds his friend from the living room, though; intensively staring at the television. It's time for children's shows, so of course Kui Xian is watching. Zhou Mi doesn't really care for the shows, because there are still things that get past him because of his native tongue, and the video cassettes they have brought from China are better anyway. But whenever Kui Xian wants to watch, he'll gladly watch too, and so he sits down on the floor with his younger friend, crossing his legs the exact same way as the other has done.
It's time for Dooly the Little Dinosaur, and Kui Xian can sing along to the theme music, he knows all the lyrics. Zhou Mi doesn't, but he still hums along to the song, as the green character pops into the screen with a smile as splitting as his.
After that they play. Kyuhyun wants to be Dooly, but Zhou Mi thinks he would suit that role better, and so Kyuhyun decides that he will be Godzilla instead, and so Zhou Mi can be Dooly. It's fun, and they roam across the lawn, roaring and giggling and making scary dinosaur-noises.
Then they come inside and it's time for a snack, and Kui Xian's mom insists that he should go take a nap now, because apparently playing so much with Joomi makes the younger kid tired. Zhou Mi thanks mama Cho and waves goodbye, after remembering to close Kui Xian in a tight hug and leave with a promise to come to play tomorrow.

Kyuhyun likes Zhou Mi. He likes the boy a lot, because Zhou Mi is almost like a big boy, and big boys don't play with Kyuhyun. But Zhou Mi plays, and it makes Kyuhyun feel kind of special. Now Kyuhyun has two big boy friends, Donghae and Zhou Mi. Zhou Mi has a silly way of speaking, and when he once asked about it from mom, she said it's because Zhou Mi comes from another country. Kyuhyun likes Zhou Mi's voice. It really sounds like he's happy all the time, and it makes Kyuhyun happy too.
He would like to see China one day, because that's the country where Zhou Mi comes from. He has heard that it's big, even bigger than the country he lives in, and that makes him kind of jealous. He's sure that it can't be better than Korea, though, why would Zhou Mi move there otherwise?
But even if it's not as good as Korea, Kyuhyun would like to see China. Once or twice, Zhou Mi's mama has made them pork dumplings, but Kyuhyun didn't really like the taste. He ate it almost all, anyway, and the rest he left on the plate until mama collected it away. It was a little embarrassing, to be not able to eat the dishes Zhou Mi so wanted to show him and let him taste, but in the end they figured out that playing restaurant that served rock candy and vanilla (sand) puddings was much better way to spend time anyway.
Only once they have had a fight, that was almost as big as the fights mom and dad sometimes have. They were playing Three Little Bears, like on television. It had been all Zhou Mi's fault, Kyuhyun thinks so. He shouldn't have gone and said that Kyuhyun should be the child bear, because Zhou Mi is older and thus he has to be the daddy bear. Besides, it's not Kyuhyun who likes Ahra's toys so much that he would like to play home instead of police and baddie. It makes perfect sense that Kyuhyun would be the daddy bear and Zhou Mi the mommy bear, together their family would be nice. Kyuhyun has a wonderful teddy bear too, it's even bigger than Ahra's purple teddy, and this one has nice navy blue fur that no other teddies have. There they would have had the child bear, but Zhou Mi didn't think the idea was as amazing as Kyuhyun knew it was.
He had not meant to throw the car, but he did so anyway. It is Zhou Mi's beautiful black car, the one Kyuhyun is secretly so jealous of. It hits Zhou Mi in his left temple, but Kyuhyun doesn't stay long enough to check if he has left a mark. Instead, he hides behind the closed doors of a closet, the cocoon of mom's dresses and unused towels shielding him from reality and into the soothing darkness.
The tears he cries are not loud like Zhou Mi's, not out of physical pain and the childish ”notice me, I'm hurt”. He knows Zhou Mi cries because of him, and that is what makes his own tears taste so salty as they roll down his puffy cheeks.
*
Zhou Mi is mostly wailing because it did hurt, and it surprised him that Kyuhyun would throw the car, but still also because he would have never believed that he would really do that. Zhou Mi trusts Kyuhyun, a lot more than old friends (even though he kind of excludes Ren from this count), and just a little less than mama and papa. Kyuhyun is his best friend, and it's not only for the reason that he doesn't really have any other friends. Kyuhyun is his best friend, and now he has been bad.
But Zhou Mi is quick to forget, because he wants to count all the smiles, all the gentle touches, the adventures they have been through with Kui Xian. So he's also quick to forgive, and even if he still has sore red splotched on his skin as a reminder, it's Zhou Mi who seeks Kyuhyun, finds him under the clothes, next to a forgotten , old suitcase that is as black as Zhou Mi's car. Kyuhyun stares back at him with eyes that are like forest pools, some of the tears still unshed, some tacky on his cheeks as they mark their path. It takes a moment for Zhou Mi to collect his brave little self and kneel down, a small pout still pursing his lips, chin jutting stubbornly. But it's not a sad pout, the corners of his mouth are slightly upturned, and even though his eyes are red and puffy, he doesn't sob anymore.
"Did it.. did it hurt?" Kyuhyun kind of wants to add 'Mimi' to the end of his question, to show that he really cares, but he's not too sure if Zhou Mi accepts his apology. It's dim in the closet, his hair still as wild as if he had been running on the yard, playing tag. Kyuhyun wants to play tag, with Zhou Mi - even if Zhou Mi has long legs that run faster, he wants to play with him. Or they could play Three little bears. Kyuhyun is ever ready to accept Zhou Mi for the daddy bear's role. He can be the child bear. If it just makes Zhou Mi smile.
"Yes, it hurt," Zhou Mi's voice almost cracks, but he finds his smile again, adding enthusiasm and a new idea. His eyes are sparkling, the sadness long forgotten, as it if had never even been there. "But you could blow a kiss to it, mama says that kissing will make it better", he suggests, pointing at the swelling. Kyuhyun can see the smile again on his lips, the white teeth and a flash of gum as the smile becomes lopsided, the left part of his face smiling even more than the other. Kyuhyun doesn't say it, but he likes the smile like that. He likes how it makes Zhou Mi's eyes narrow slightly; he has the eyes of a dog - dogs have as honest eyes as Zhou Mi has. Kyuhyun likes it.
Yet he doesn't say anything about Zhou Mi's smile, just stumbles closer, standing up. He's finally taller than the other, Zhou Mi kneeling on the floor in front of him. His forehead is warm, he can feel the rush of blood on the bump as he presses his lips on it, blowing air at the moist mark he has left on it.
Zhou Mi smiles at him, that dog smile Kyuhyun likes so. The younger boy offers him a hand, helping him up, before pressing a firm hand on his chest and rushing to the door.
"Tag! You're it!"
