ok. i'm trying to read all of this bullshit for two essays i have due tomorrow and all i can conclude from emerson's "the poet" and "nature" is that emerson is a self-righteous tool too proud of his ejaculations to notice any discrepancy in his high-falutin' logic. and he's racist. and sexist.

i am so pissed at life right now.

Haha, Emerson wasn't a racist! Sexist, maybe. Self-righteous and egotistical, more than likely.

I don't think you should be viewing Emerson in the context of material and immaterial. I think you have to look at him as more spiritual and metaphysical than anything else.

Emerson is good stuff.

Thoreau, though, is the man and I hate Emerson for how he treated Thoreau.

emerson was totally racist. In Nature, he writes that "savages" speak languages that are as simple as primary language. you know, like when cavepeople first started to grunt. he also equates "fools and savages." i just sold my book, or i'd give you a direct quotation.

I never read Emerson on Thoreau.

I'm not sure that it's possible to view Emerson outside the realm of the material world when he writes so much shit about flowers and outside.

honestly i could give a shit. two more exams and two more papers until school is oooooooooover!!!!!!!!!!

then you're going to come to cincinnati, right?

You're speaking about the chapter "Language" in Nature. I think it's important to put the text in context of the time. The term "savage" didn't necessarily carry the same meaning then as it does now, which, ironically, is the concept that Emerson is confronting in "Language," which is to say that it's pretty arbitrary and has different meanings everywhere.

The fools and savages quote is in the chapter called "Spirit." He doesn't equate savages to fools. He's saying that if a person attempts to "define or describe" God (or the spirit) that they will be like fools in the sense that they will be dumbfounded and savages in the sense that there will be no word found for it.

Sorry, I don't mean to pontificate. I just really enjoy Emerson, haha.

Anyway, you'd like Thoreau more.

Hmmmmmm, Cincinnati!
