I've started to take a philosophical approach to all that that has helped be lower my frustration level. Namely, everybody is entitled to their opinion no matter how bizar and unless it affects me directly or harms someone/themselves directly, I just leave things be. No point in getting worked up. Or getting them worked up.
Ultimately, if their opinion isn't doing harm them leave things be. It's having all the effect of a butter knife trying to scratch diamond. :-)
This is unfortunately not the case here in the States. While these movements have an apparently hard time gaining a foothold in Europe, they are part of an ever-growing movement here
( ... )
Most of this I know as I've been following the debate and the more severe issues via NewScientist for the last few years. From the outside I can't help but appreciate the irony of Americans fear of science when their political strength is essentially based on scientific achievements. The other irony noted is that a surprising part of the scientific strength in the US is based on people who are not originally from there - not unlike Viola4. Most people that I talk to here share the same view on the situation but at the same time we know it's kind of enevitable. All great powers fail after a time although the circumstances surrounding the failure can vary.
I could get into a very long discussion here about this - it's a big topic :-) We'll save it for a few beers and the campfire ;-)
Well, unfortunately (or maybe fortunately for my nerves), I didn't have the chance to confront that guy in person. I looked at the speech online, after a colleague of mine invited me to the actual speech and I (fortunately or unfortunately) couldn't show up. (Yes, that colleague is a scientist. Meteorology and not biology or archeology, but still.)
