Today, I learned how to solder! (Rhymes with daughter.) Well, learned the easy beginning step of tacking parts onto a board. But, still, I affixed headers and terminal blocks to circuit boards using a soldering iron and lead solder -- for 3 hours! It was fun. :-D I did 58 boards in all, with 5 pieces on each. That's dreadfully slow. But I did them ( Read more... )

Thanks for the guide on pronouncing solder...I guess I'm a bit stupid because I have never put two and two together on that. I've heard the word in context and seen it in context, but never have I had to use it in writing.

(58 x 5)/3=??? 290/3 ~ 96/hour...breaking it down, that would be about one and a half per minute, forty seconds for each piece, and done correctly. I'm not sure I understand what that entails, but I'm very bad at doing such thing fast. I hope you're able to improve your speed! And you say it was fun...actually, I've had fun doing things with my hands because it's kind of cool to challenge myself...but I'm not sure that would be fun.=) I'm glad you enjoy it, though!

I enjoy working with my hands, particularly when the job requires a steady eye and hand. Soldering falls into this category! I also enjoy mincing and finely slicing food products, beading, assembling circuit boards, screwing in screws, putting together small mechanical things that I understand (;-)), etc.

Oh, and I ALWAYS pronounce solder just the way it looks when I am reading it, but say it properly when I talk about it. Isn't that weird? I have to "translate" it in my head when I read. One of the (few, in my opinion) drawbacks to learning to read phonetically. ;-)

LOL! I hadn't thought about it, but I suppose so...that must be why I mispronounce so many words. But what is one to expect with our beautiful language that combines so many different languages that each have their own ways of pronouncing things?!
