As best as I can tell, those I call Feminists throw a hissy fit whenever a woman is both not the absolute center of the story and/or when she does "traditional" things like have babies and love men.
Edit: Oh, and everyone isn't doing it; it is the usual chorus of the vocal minority. I'm guessing most people won't even care enough about it to say anything.
I'm with you. I don't see their treatment of Uhura as horrible. I think she was a stronger character than Sulu or Checkov. Each of them got to have some "I'm cool" time, but I feel like Uhura had more "I'm cool" scenes including one where the direction of the ship hung on her say-so, when she supported Kirk about the Klingons.
I will agree that there weren't as many female extra's as I would have liked. The fact that there weren't as many female main characters as male ones is because the main characters were all drawn from the original series.
I personally didn't mind the miniskirts. It was part of the original series, and they didn't focus or dwell on it. It was a place where they could make you feel connected to that series.

I will agree that there weren't as many female extra's as I would have liked. The fact that there weren't as many female main characters as male ones is because the main characters were all drawn from the original series.
