Rose Tyler: Girl Adventurer

May 11, 2008 17:28

It’s tough to be a Rose fan these days. After reading some posts labeling Rose Tyler as “a dumb blonde”, a “chavvy dumb blonde shopgirl”, or arguing that Rosefen don’t love Rose as a character and view her only as an appendage to the Doctor, I decided to write this to offer a different viewpoint. One of the fun (or not so fun, depending on your ( Read more... )

An earlier commenter said something about being jealous of Rose as she's the Doctor's love interest. I'd definitely say there's a bit of that in my dislike of s2 Rose. There's also the fact that I can see myself reacting like Rose does, and didn't enjoy that. All this was added to the fact that 10 is incredibly hyper and jumpy. Rose in s1 countered 9's melancholy and emoness and in s2 only added to the craziness that is 10. That's probably why I love Martha and Donna so much, they manage to ground that hurricane.I agree; there are times when I hated certain moments in S2 because I've been there, I've been jealous, treated people not as well as I should've, etc. But I like to see the positive side too-that she did learn from those mistakes. That's one of the things I love about Doctor Who: the female characters are so rounded, diverse, and real to me. I wish there were more positive female characters on television like Donna, Martha, Rose, Harriet Jones, Romana, SJS, Mrs. Moore, Nancy, Sally, etc ( ... )

Also here via who_daily.

This has to be the best meta on Rose that I have ever read :)

You managed to capture all of the reasons on why I love Rose and then some, and even find evidence to counter the beliefs a lot of Who fandom has towards her. I find it baffling that people tend to nitpick on only her faults, to the extreme, and then claim that she is a mary-sue afterward. Yes, she has flaws, but if she didn't have them then she wouldn't be human and be the companion that many people have grown to love. Even the Doctor has flaws, and he's supposed to be the all-powerful Time Lord. Every interesting character has flaws, so why not try to balance between the good and the bad, and not focus entirely on only the negative aspects of a character? I just hope that when Rose comes back she'll be the kick-ass girl that got me into Doctor Who in the first place.

Thank you for writing this! It's definitely going in my memories!

Thanks so much for reading! =D I found it really strange too; Rose has realistic flaws that most people have experienced at least once, jealousy, taking people for granted, etc. It's not like she went on a killing spree or tried to burn down the Tardis in a fit of jealous rage or something. I think Rose's flaws enhance her character and make her good moments even more special. =)

Holy fucking hell, word!

This actually made me tear up.
There is a reason that Rose is the first female character I've ever really fallen in love with, and it's because hey! She's given a real personality!
And this is it, and it is lovely. Perfect essay here, thank you for sharing it!

Here via the_spdn ... and you're my new hero. :) This was a wonderful essay, and I agree with you wholeheartedly. Rose isn't perfect, but she was perfect for the Doctor and that's what matters.

I hope you won't mind if I friend you. We Rose fans need to stick together. :)
