there's a girl on campus that has your face. and everytime I pass her I want to reach out and grab her and hug her really hard, but she isn't you so I don't.

A cow will only attempt to dislodge the flies crawling on her after enough have accumulated -generally speaking. Perhaps the Earth reacts in a similar fashion. That's not to say that earthquakes and natural disasters wouldn't happen if there were no humans present. It would just be far less devastating if the population density weren't so high.

The earth needed to lighten the demand placed upon her.

Nonetheless, I'm glad that extensive relief efforts are taken to ease the suffering of many and future considerations are put into place so as to lessen the impact of future disasters.
