Personality:
Pikmin are, practically by nature, curious creatures. Ai is no exception. While she's not the bravest of the Pikmin in Olimar's garden, she has a strong sense of curiosity about her world. Particularly when her brothers and sisters would leave the garden and come back with human bodies and names, Ai knew she wanted to learn more about humans, Final Destination City, and the mysterious Smash Academy. She'd also like to learn more in general, being a little Pikmin who knows nothing except what's in her garden.
But until Olimar had left, Ai kept to safe activities like sunbathing, inspecting the other plants in Olimar's garden, and listening to and concentrating on the music the neighbors would play in the afternoon. Occasionally, she liked to draw pictures of her brothers and sisters in the dirt with broken twigs. While her brave sisters were at school, fighting aliens and falling in frozen lakes, Ai lived a safe and content Pikmin life, doing these things that would have made her smile if she had had the gills.
Ai is fairly relaxed, having lived a quiet and happy existance for 3 long years. Of course she has her fears and her faults, but for the most part she's easygoing. Although she hasn't been around other people before; all she's known is her siblings and Olimar. If anyone were to insult her, it'd be revealed fairly quickly that she's sensitive. Usually, Ai's too laid back to be self-conscious about herself. But no one has really ever called attention to anything for her to be self-conscious about, and she's never been insulted.
Pikmin aren't known to be the smartest things on the planet, but Ai is observant and pays close attention to her surroundings. She learns new things fairly quickly, although it takes quite a bit of practice for her to make perfect. While she may learn quickly, she still isn't particularly smart. Additionally, like most Pikmin, Ai is a natural mimic. She's already picked up on some behaviors she's learned from Olimar and her now-human siblings. As a human, she'll sometimes try to mimic the demeanor and speech of people she admires.
When Ai heard about her sisters and brothers making friends at the school- friends who were not Pikmin or Olimar- she was intrigued. Ai has always been a "talkative" Pikmin- squeaking and humming throught the day to herself and anyone else who would listen- and she's very social within the garden. And because strangers haven't proven to be dangerous yet, Ai doesn't fear them and is a rather outgoing little Pikmin.
Ai's greatest fear is danger. While she was able to carry explosives as a Yellow Pikmin, the idea of it didn't intrigue her as much as it did her other Yellow siblings. And while she was able to glide with her big, yellow ears, it was only on a rare occasion that she did. These were- and continue to be- dangerous things. As a Purple Pikmin, water is scarier and more dangerous than it ever has been and so she avoids it as much as possible. Birds and flying creatures are also dangerous, as Ai has observed from watching them pluck little worms and other bugs the size of a Pikmin and taking off with them. Thus, Ai is also afraid of birds.
One thing Ai lacks is a good sense of bravery. The main reason Ai took so long to visit Smash Academy was her lack of bravery. When Olimar left, however, Ai became more adventerous. She felt more comfortable snooping around and exploring when there was no one around. That remains true in other areas; Ai is simply more adventerous when she's on her own. For example, she'd be more willing to try a new food on her own than in front of a group of friends.
Backstory:
Captain Olimar crash-landed on a distant planet filled with mysterious plants. Among those plants, there were Pikmin. There were Blue Pikmin who were able to swim well, Red Pikmin who were immune to fire, and Yellow Pikmin which were able to glide and carry the dangerous, explosive bomb rocks. The hopeless captain soon discovered these Pikmin and used their abilities to help him rebuild his damaged ship, the S.S. Dolphin.
In 30 days, Captain Olimar had repaired the ship enough to return to his home planet, Hocotate, safely. Sometime later... maybe it was a few days, or maybe it was a month... Olimar returned to the Pikmin planet, this time with his coworker, Louie. The two had come to collect treasure. They discovered Candypop Buds and consequently Purple and White Pikmin.
When the Captain returned, he soon retired and came to a place called Final Destination City with his family. He began to teach at Smash Academy and started raising Pikmin in his backyard garden. Of those Pikmin, there was a little Yellow Pikmin without a name. She wasn't brought to class, she wasn't adopted by any students. She stayed in the garden and watched the other Pikmin leave.
She learned the other Pikmin's names. There was Ionia, Stanley, and Raphael. Ionia, and another curious purple Pikmin named Petunia who had traveled to the school on her own, learned humanization techniques at the school. The nameless Yellow Pikmin was intrigued, but not brave enough to make an adventure out of it or anything. She would listen to Olimar's stories about her sisters. Other Pikmin started to leave, and others returned. She squeaked excitedly whenever they'd come to visit or come to stay.
At some point, Olimar had left. Ionia had left too, and the nameless Yellow Pikmin didn't know where, but she did know it was very upsetting. Most of the other Pikmin had returned to the garden; Stanley, Petunia, and a few others. Olimar didn't completely abandon the garden, though. Vianca, one of the Pikmin sisters who had stayed at Smash Academy, would often check in on them.
When Olimar left, the Yellow Pikmin had become more adventurous. She explored more of the garden. She explored Olimar's quaint home. And one day, she explored her way into a Violet Candypop bud.
Suddenly, she was slower. She weighed what felt like a thousand times more than her original weight. Oh, but it was okay. No big deal. Really, the most upsetting thing was losing her beautiful, white flower. It had been replaced with a leaf. But it wasn't so bad. She surprised herself with how easily she had grown accustomed to her new tubby, purple body. While she was slower, fatter, and leafier, she was also stronger. She was also purple, and purple had always been her favorite color.
Her slowness didn't stop her from wanting to explore, however. She was determined to visit Smash Academy. And so she left. Her trip lasted what felt like a month, but was more like a day or two. After a squeaky and confusing conversation with a giant hand, the unnamed Purple Pikmin somehow ended up enrolled at the school. She also left the hand's office with a name- Ai, for her violet color- and a mandarin orange.
Ai was excited, but overwhelmed. She wanted to find Vianca, but instead she sat down to take a nap. She'd figure out how to be a human and type on the computer when she woke up...

Ai had never seen anything like it before. She stared, awe-struck, through the thick glass and at the bizarre animal behind it. A bloated and bumpy head, only one eye that she could see, and 8 long legs that would stick to the glass as it paced through its tank, showing off its unusual suction cups. The sign beside the tank informed the Purple Pikmin that the odd creature was a North Pacific Giant Octopus.
Ai decided she liked the North Pacific Giant Octopus. She wondered how it would look as a human, too. She imagined its tentacles on the head of a beautiful woman. For 5 minutes, Ai watched the octopus float around in its tank. Eventually, the cephalopod grew tired of that and tucked itself into a tight corner and changed its color. The sudden change made Ai audibly gasp, and she pressed her face up against the glass to try and get a better look at it.
But it had completely camouflaged itself. She couldn't differentiate its body from any of the other things in that corner. She backed up. She clicked her tongue. She stared, as if that would make it move again. After a minute or two, she reluctantly moved from her spot and moved on to the next exhibit in the mysterious building called the aquarium.
